Once occupied by the Wanaruah and Kamilaroi people, the area was settled by Europeans in 1820. Four years later, Henry Dangar named an area at the junction of the Hunter River ‘Muscle Brook’ because he found a large amount of mussels on its shores (at the time, mussel was also spelt "muscle!"). In 1833 a township was laid out and for about 60 years it went by several different names, including Musclebrook and Muscletown (which would make a great name for a gym!). Today the Muswellbrook Shire includes Muswellbrook, as well as other small nearby towns like Denman, Muscle Creek and Sandy Hollow.

The area around Muswellbrook is full of horse studs and vineyards that are open and waiting for you to come and taste-test! Take a ride along the Upper Hunter Wine Trail, which takes you on a winding trip past over 27 wineries and through small outback towns like Denman and Scone.

To delve into the town’s past, take the Muswellbrook Heritage Walk, which features heritage-listed buildings dating back to the 1800s. If you want to see a little of its culture, visit the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre, where you’ll see the current exhibition as well as a permanent collection showcasing the work of local artists.

The Wollemi National Park, the second biggest national park in NSW, is only a short drive away. There you can explore the cliffs and rivers, rainforests and woodlands, and gives those joggers a workout. If you’re keen for some fishing, Lake Liddell is 15kms out of town, with a bird sanctuary, picnic and BBQ areas.
