Hoa Binh feels like a completely different world from Hanoi, even though it’s just over 50 kilometres from the capital city. The city is split into two by the Da River – the northern half is modern while the south is consider the old town – and ends up at Hoa Binh Dam to the east. It is the largest hydro-electrical dam in Southeast Asia and forms the lake mentioned above.

What many travellers will enjoy most about Hoa Binh are the chances to explore. In the surrounding countryside, you can find lovely rural villages where you can see the colourful, striped traditional clothing worn by women performing traditional dance. One of the best villages to visit is Mai Chau, about 70km south of Hoa Binh. Whether you choose to take the bus or drive yourself there on a motorcycle, you will make your way through gorgeous hilly land until you reach the valley that the village sits in. In summer and spring you will be greeted by a stunning expanse of bright green rice paddies and vegetation, which turns into rich gold and browns during the fall and winter. The journey is as much a treat as the village itself.
