When people think of Indonesia they almost imagine dancing on the tropical beaches of Bali. They hardly think about the bustling capital of Jakarta, but they should…and you should, too. While there, you’ll drink amazing coffee, dance the night away in clubs and visit a number of different museums. Browse Wotif’s cheap flights to Jakarta and send us a postcard from the capital.
Have you ever heard of an ojek? It’s a motorcycle taxi that’s extremely popular in densely populated countries like Indonesia. Trust us, you’re going to fall in with these two-wheeled beasts…especially when you’re weaving through Jakarta’s notorious traffic. For the 20km drive from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) to Wotif’s hotels in Jakarta, we recommend taking a regular taxicab. Other than that, ojeks are perfect.
If your flight to Jakarta is landing in the early morning hours, stop in a café for a cup of Java roast to wake up. If you were tired from your flight, you won’t be after a cup of this stuff. You’ll have plenty of energy to check out the National Museum of Indonesia and its collection of skulls from Java cavemen.
Would you rather arrive under the cover of darkness? Head for the Little Japan neighbourhood and take part in a serious karaoke competition.
The best way to blend in with the locals is to, well, try to blend in with them. Go for a bike ride along the cycle trail in Waduk Pluit Park and then grab a handful of sate. What’s sate? It’s a grilled meat skewer of beef or chicken…or both, if you’re into that. Jakarta holidays aren’t complete without eating sate at least a dozen times.
