Oman is an oasis of down-to-earth Arabian culture in a desert of oil-based wealth in the Middle East. That’s not to say the landscape isn’t largely desert. Because it is. But there’s also an adventurous mix of old and new vibes, pristine coastline and beautiful mosques. This nation has only been open to foreign tourism since the 1970s, so revel in the knowledge that few travellers have been here before you!
Most international flights to Oman land in Muscat International Airport (MCT), which also happens to be where some of the nation’s best attractions are. Awesome, right? With only one other airport in the country, buses are one of the main ways to get around.
Unless you specify to the driver, taxis in Oman are shared, so get ready to make some new friends. To see sites off the beaten path, your best bet is to score one of Wotif’s sweet car hire deals.
If you land in the morning, you’ll have plenty of time to travel to the central coast to check out some super-cool old forts, dwarfing sand dunes and coastal views. Do your Oman flights deposit you in the afternoon? Get yourself a true Omani souvenir, like a silver rosewater shaker or Nizwa box.
If you land in the evening, then belly up to one of the city of Muscat’s fine restaurants and enjoy huge portions of Arabic food. Stuffed? Head back to you accommodation in Oman to digest overnight.
Want to “sea” some turtles? Head to Masirah Island, the breeding grounds of several species of the undersea creatures. Looking for something a little quieter? Check out Bahla, a small oasis town that just happens to be an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Arabian nights, Arabian days—they’re both charming and modest with airfare to Oman. And if you still want to see all the bling and sparkle of Arabia, then check out our Dubai packages. You can book it all and save right here of Wotif!
