This place and its history is very cool! Being able to stay in a place with so much history, isn’t something you have the opportunity to do very often. This run-down hotel is bursting with love and pride, which more than accommodate for its many obvious shortcomings. I love it. The staff were stellar -- especially Tammy, at the front desk. This hotel is not for everyone, but, for the patron of a certain ilk, it is pure magic.

No TV, coffee pot or microwave in rooms, only at front lobby common area. Rooms clean, bed was good, plenty of hot water, some things like bathroom sink replaced, but over-all the building is very old and falling apart. Some photos shown are very out of date and misleading. If you just need a place to sleep and a shower, it's okay, and if you can get in on the Opera House tour, it is very interesting.

Dilapidated building with every paint surface peeling. Hallway smelled like mold or maybe feces. The bathtub was full of dead flies when I arrived, and the floor was bending upwards at the edges. The air conditioning sounded like a jet engine and smelled like dust. Absolutely cannot recommend this place.

This was a convenient pick for us because other lodgings in Death Valley were busy during the holidays. We were nervous about other reviews that said the walls were thin, but we took a risk for two nights, especially because they are dog-friendly! Pros: good location, super friendly staff, cozy vibes, our heat worked, our hot water was great even with a wait. Cons: old towels that had thread falling apart, bed was a bit stiff, cold air came in through the space on the door Neutral: communal space

This may not be the place for the snobby, but if you have an open mind and love quirky this is a cool place. It's an old building and has had some trouble from Mother nature lately but it has a charm to it. It has some quirky plumbing tricks but once you have the hot water dialed in the shower feels great after several days of desert camping. It's quiet at night and the bed was comfortable. Next time I will make time for the tour which I hear is real interesting.
