Summary:
A private, light-filled hideaway set above Onetangi, Art Lovers’ Retreat is designed for two, quiet, simple, and surrounded by native greenery.
The Space:
Art Lovers’ Retreat is a self-contained cottage arranged across two connected pavilions. The setting is elevated and peaceful, with greenery surrounding the home and natural light coming through throughout the day.
The main pavilion holds the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen areas. Under the high gable roof, the space feels uncluttered and calm, opening directly to a wide deck that looks out to the bush. The kitchen is fully equipped and works well for easy meals, slow mornings, or relaxed evenings in.
The bedroom sits in the adjoining pavilion, creating a quiet, separate space while still keeping everything connected. It has a comfortable king bed and a simple, peaceful layout ideal for long, easy mornings. The bathroom is positioned nearby and is practical for everyday use.
The deck is the centre of the home, shaded through the day, sheltered from the afternoon breeze, and a comfortable place to spend time outside. Most guests end up using it for meals, reading, or unwinding after exploring the island.

The Neighborhood:
Art Lovers’ Retreat is set above Onetangi, in a quiet, green pocket that feels private and settled while still being close to the island’s most loved beaches and dining spots. The elevated position creates a calm, residential atmosphere, with established planting and a sense of space around the home.
Onetangi Beach is around a ten minute walk downhill, opening onto a long sweep of white sand that suits swimming, early morning walks, and unhurried days by the water. The beach area is also home to several popular cafés and restaurants, making it easy to combine beach time with coffee, lunch, or a relaxed dinner without needing to travel far.
Breakfast and casual daytime options are close by, including Charlie Farley’s and the Beach Store, both set right by the sand and well suited to easy starts to the day. For longer lunches, Onetangi offers several well regarded options, including Three Seven Two, while Oneroa Village is a short drive away and provides additional cafés, shops, and galleries in a lively but compact centre.
The surrounding area is also well known for its vineyards and cellar doors. Tantalus Estate and Te Motu are nearby, making winery lunches and tastings simple to plan, while Stonyridge sits further along the valley and remains a favourite for long afternoons among the vines. For something more casual, The Heke brewery is also close, offering craft beers, wood fired food, and a relaxed outdoor setting.
The neighbourhood suits guests who enjoy having plenty to do within easy reach while still returning to a peaceful, residential base at the end of the day.
