Winter Sports in Wanaka

Blame it on the snow-capped mountains, the charming town centre or the cosy après-ski lodges - one thing's for sure: there's something special about Wanaka in the winter.

If you're visiting Wanaka from early June to mid to late October (the resort's season dates), you're in luck. This is a winter wonderland, with access to the largest ski terrain in the South Island. Whether you're a beginner, a snow bunny or the après-ski type, Wanaka will make you feel right at home.

Want to spend the day carving powder? You have options. Wanaka offers access to three diverse ski areas: Cardrona, Treble Cone and Snow Farm. For even more adventure, this lively resort town is home to the largest heli-ski terrain in the Southern Hemisphere.

Skiing and Snowboarding

  • You and your skis will be spoilt for choice. Cardrona, Treble Cone and Snow Farm are within a 40-minute drive of Wanaka's accommodations.
  • All kinds of Wanaka ski packages are available. Beginners, intermediates and kids will love Cardrona Alpine ski resort. The park is used for training by Olympic athletes.
  • For intermediate skiers and snowboarders looking for epic views of Lake Wanaka, it doesn't get better than Treble Cone.

Après-Ski

  • Once you've had your fill of the slopes, head back into town to indulge in Wanaka's vibrant après-ski scene.
  • Whether you're looking for a raging party or a classy cocktail, Wanaka will deliver. For locally brewed beer, check out Rhyme and Reason.
  • Oenophiles (or wine connoisseurs) should head to Maude, the tasting room inside Bistro Gentil. After a glass or two, grab a table at the bistro and enjoy a decadent French meal. You'll be warmed up in no time.
