Gorgeous location, really disappointing eating.

Great location, pristine beach (except for the no see ums, but worth the hassle of applying bug spray), gorgeous views, lovely and impressive room (Jr. Oceanfront Suite). However, anyone looking to indulge in dining options will be disappointed...they don't exist. You'll eat, but you'll be bored by the menu in two days (or one, if you're a foodie), frustrated by the really uncoordinated, almost untrained feel of the wait staff, and marveling at the lack of supplies (no steak, menu in the room not the same as in the restaurant, out of things). I don't know if it's a cultural difference, but most were very uninterested (appearing) in making the stay extraordinary. Very few instances of anyone engaging with us during any interactions. Mostly just "here you go" when being served or inquiring about amenities, usually without a smile. Not rude, however, just very standoffish feel. The food end of this place JUST DOES NOT match the beautiful, upscale feel of the rest of it and as you're essentially trapped at the outer end of the island with a very long drive to eat elsewhere, I'm really surprised they haven't responded to the many reviews about improving the dining because if they had a dining experience that even came close to the room and the area, this place would be UNBEATABLE, INCREDIBLE, AND EXTRAORDINARY instead of just good. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again if the dining was good...but an expensive vacation just isn't the right time to have daily disappointment. :(

We got through it

I really wish it was a better experience. The rooms were not up to par. We had to switch rooms 2 times because of issues. First room the shower didn’t work. Second room the ac was broken. Third room didn’t even lock properly or have a working bathtub but we decided twice was enough and we would just take our chances. The front desk totally screwed up my reservation and charged me twice. I still have not been refunded but hopefully will in the near future. Otherwise Harold’s wonderful smile kept us smiling as well. We enjoyed the beach and the goombay smashes. Don’t forget your bug spray or you will come home itching your skin off. The noseeums are atrocious.

Based upon previous reviews and the "Certificate of Excellence," we expected an A+ experience when we arrived by personal plane FEB 12-14, 2019. The resort was essentially closed!! There is a dispute among the ownership on how the resort is to be managed: the only restaurant is closed; the gift shop is closed; the main lobby has been closed and replaced by a shack near the marina; there were no activities whatsoever other than the pool and some water toys; no open fitness center; the marina was locked down. On FEB 15 the weather was awful and there was no lunch or dinner available since the TIKI shack was closed which was the only place for limited meals. Our first assigned lodging room reeked of disinfectant much like Lysol that our lungs burned. We were given another room where the bathroom counter had a non-stop army of tiny ants. The only saving feature was the remaining personnel who tried their best. Most staff members were dismissed and some ended up at the Blue Marlin resort where we were compelled to have dinner each night. We are terribly disappointed that OBB did not extend the courtesy of alerting its future guests of the situation. We are appealing to Expedia, our booking agent, for some compensation.

Hotel in disrepair

Unfortunately the hotel is very expensive and very run down. The hotel has no WiFi even though we had picked a more expensive hotel with WiFi so that we could work. In our room the toilet was blocked, the tumble dryer did not work, the coffee machine did not work. When we asked for pots and pans to cook for ourselves they were old and rusted and there were no sharp knives. When we asked for a knife we were informed that there were none. When we enquirer about a massage there was no one availible. Some days things were open and some days they were not. If we did not have a car and Bahamian SIM cards we would have been very stranded. It is a beautiful location but clearly in disrepair and quite a disappointment.

A lovely quiet and relaxing place to spend a few days. We had a room with an ocean view and 30 steps from the warm carribean sea. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful, restaurant has a varied menu and quality of food is good. The Old Bahama Bay Resort is at the far west end of Grand Bahama so if flying into Freeport purchase a few groceries before making the 40 minute drive. Also, be aware of the no-see-um bugs that are prevalent in July and August, as the names suggests you can't see them but they bite and leave you with an itch similar to a mosquito.

Staff nowhere to be found

when we checked into our room we noticed a bad mildew smell and there was only one coffe cup . The room wasn't very clean either.when we went to check out the staff wasn't there in the office. When we asked the staff in the restaurant next door they told us " well the might show up in a half hour or maybe in an hour or two. Because we had to leave early to beat the storms as we were crossing the Gulf Stream we had to leave the keys with the restaurant staff. When we got home we were charged an extra $72.00 on our bill. After many tries we still haven't gotten an answer as to why. We are now in the process of disputing the extra charge with our credit card company. Needless to say, overall not happy with our stay.

The Hotel Staff Deserve a 15 out of 10!

The locals that work at OBB are absolutely awesome! From the beautiful smile of the check-in receptionist to the very helpful guys working the docks, everyone had a fantastic attitude! I felt very welcome; like some old friends were trying to help me. This included my cleaning staff, the bar tender by the pool, and the wait staff at the restaurant. I don't usually do reviews, but these outstanding employees deserve this review! That includes you Carl who I ran into on his evening off. He took time to introduce me to his family, etc., and offered me a drink. Thanks Carl! This review of the staff takes on more meaning if you understand that many of the staff's homes were destroyed in the recent hurricane! Talk about resilient and inspiring people! To management: Please share my kudos with your staff. You are very fortunate to have them and because of them, I will be back instead of going to Bimini. The facility endured a powerful hurricane this past year and is still repairing various areas. Although understandable, the deferred maintenance is my reason for a 3/5 rating for Facilities and a 4/5 overall rating. Once repaired, my rating would be 5/5. That and the "no-see-ums" (bugs that bite around dust and dawn) are my only complaints. To their credit, OBB was spraying some kind of pesticide around dusk. My advise: bring some good bud spray, your favorite fishing gear, and prepare to have a great time!!

Nice private peaceful resort.

Nice place but state of the art gym is flat out wrong. Old equipment that has rarely seen maintenance it would seem. No tools to adjust the available bikes and they too seem like they see little maintenance. Tub didn't work. Don't get me wrong. Very nice place but seems they could use a maintenance person. Taking care of these type of things would make this the place you should not miss.

Away from it all

We were unfortunate with our stay in a number of important respects. The hotel was a long way from anywhere. \\\\\\\\\there was a power cut in two of the 3 days we were there. Even when we had eklectricty we did not have TV one day and wifi was intermittent to say the least.. The manager was understanding and gave us a substantial credit agauinst the cost of our stay. She triued her best toi make us happy. You definitely need a car if you are staying there - unless you have a boat since there was a very nice marina.

Relaxing Getaway

W truly enjoyed our stay. It was very relaxing. The staff in every capacity were friendly and professional. The hotel is a bit far from Freeport so you have to hire a taxi to take you to see Freeport and the other Hotel and Shopping areas. (A half hour ride-but the driver was awesome). Also, where the beaches were beautiful we could not really swim. The food in the restaurant by the beach was delicious!

So glad we found this place.

On the other side of Grand Bahama Island from the airport but well worth the drive/ride. By crossing the island you are able to get a feel for the place/people/way of life that you wouldn't by staying near the airport. They have their own marina that caters to large boats (you can fuel your boat) complete with an air landing strip and it's own customs. By staying in West End (the name of the nearby settlement) - you feel like you're really getting away and having a proper break/vacation versus staying in a large touristy hotel. I can't say enough good things about the staff at this property and the beautiful facilities. The rooms are lovely with views of the ocean/beach/lush gardens and very clean and well appointed. You wake up in the morning to birds singing and can have breakfast and lunch at the beach. The staff bend over backwards to accommodate guests (from housekeeping to the front desk and everyone in between). The staff/management at the beach restaurant/bar (Tiki Bar and Restaurant) are amazing as well as the head of the events/tours and equipment area. These folks go way above and beyond to create an environment that is relaxing and where you feel at home and taken care of/pampered. They even worked with my fiance to create a surprise custom lobster dinner on the beach for my birthday that was truly magical! They are well traveled but know the island inside and out and will make sure you know the local places to go to fully appreciate the island. Amazing place.
