Beginning life as an Aboriginal mission in 1898, Weipa was developed as a town by mining company Comalco, who saw potential in the bauxite deposits on its coast. These days, Weipa’s population of almost 3000 is mostly made up of Comalco employees.

Outdoorsy types have come to the right place. Weipa is the place to be for barramundi and you can catch some in the ancient water holes and 10 river systems within 150km of the town. Sail, have a picnic or fire up a sausage sizzle at Lake Patricia or Lake McLeod, two artificial lakes with BBQs and picnic tables. Just be careful if you take a swim, because crocs have been spotted in the water! Hire a houseboat and relax in Albatross Bay, go on a fishing or croc-spotting tour or hire a quad bike. To learn about the town’s Aboriginal history, make sure you visit the Cultural Centre.

When you need some fresh food or other conveniences, Weipa has a shopping centre with a Woolworths, cafe, hairdresser, chemist and bottle shop. If you’ve got a taste for the outback, why not take a road trip around the rest of the Cape York Peninsula? It’s one of the last remaining areas of wilderness in Australia and has plenty of stunning scenery, history and nature-based activities.
