Tranquil Japandi lodge in stunning award-winning coastal gardens
Shizuka Lodge rests within the luscious surrounding of Haddon Lake House, known for its contemporary architecture and award winning gardens. Blending Japanese serenity with Nordic warmth, it offers views of a Japanese garden and access to a beautiful Victorian walled garden. The coast is just minutes away, making this a peaceful base for exploring the Isle of Wight.
We respect your privacy and want you to feel at home, so we’ll leave you to enjoy the lodge and its surroundings in peace. If you need anything during your stay — from local recommendations to help with the property, we’re only a message away (you have full access to WiFi).
Shizuka Lodge is tucked into the tranquil village of St Lawrence, perched in the lush, sheltered Undercliff beneath Ventnor — a beautiful stretch of south-coast landscape known for its wild coves, rolling greenery, and sense of serenity.
A 10-minute walk west brings you to Binnel Bay, a dramatic, rugged shoreline perfect for a peaceful stroll or soaking in the sea views. For swimming, head 10 minutes east to Woody Bay, a sheltered cove with calmer waters and a cosy fire pit — an ideal spot to linger into the evening. You can also walk from Binnel Bay to Woody Bay along the seafront- it takes about 20 minutes and is quite hilly, but is great for the more adventurous!
For walkers, the Isle of Wight Coastal Path loops through the area. You can enjoy a 40-minute round-trip along the cliffs and bays, or extend it to explore further along the coastline.
The charming town of Ventnor is just a 10-minute drive away, with cafés, local shops, the esplanade, and the famous Ventnor Botanic Garden, all benefiting from the area’s mild microclimate.
Shizuka Lodge blends Japanese-inspired calm with Scandinavian warmth, set within the celebrated grounds of Haddon Lake House. Sleeping up to 4 adults and 2 children, it offers two restful bedrooms, one with a king bed, the other with a small double, plus a sofa bed in the living area.
The bathroom features a deep soaking tub and a walk-in rain shower for a spa-like touch.
In the light-filled living space, a dining table with 6 chairs is perfect for shared meals, while the fully equipped kitchen provides cookware, utensils, crockery, and glassware for home cooking.
Large windows frame views of the Japanese garden, while a furnished outdoor dining area in the Victorian walled garden offers a lovely spot for morning coffee or alfresco meals. Guests also enjoy access to the seasonal beauty of the walled garden, making this a serene coastal base for rest and connection.
Getting Here For the greatest convenience, we recommend arriving by car and taking the appropriate vehicle ferry to the Isle of Wight. This way, you’ll have the freedom to drive directly to St Lawrence, which is tucked away in a peaceful, more remote part of the island.
Vehicle ferry routes include:
- Lymington to Yarmouth – around 40 minutes - Portsmouth to Fishbourne – about 45 minutes - Southampton to East Cowes – approximately 1 hour
If travelling without a car, the Hovertravel hovercraft from Portsmouth (Southsea) to Ryde offers the fastest mainland crossing at under 10 minutes, but it is passenger-only. Once on the island, St Lawrence is best reached by car from your port of arrival, with a scenic drive through the countryside down to the coast.
A landslide in part of the Haddon Lake House grounds occurred in 2024. The area around Shizuka Lodge is completely safe, but for security and privacy guests must remain within the Victorian walled garden and their lodge’s immediate surroundings.
Please be aware that mobile phone signal here is very weak or non-existent. The perfect excuse to truly unplug and enjoy the stillness.
Due to our peaceful, tucked-away location, we recommend having a vehicle to explore the Isle of Wight with ease.
