Our stay at The Royal Oak Inn was disappointing. The staff with whom we dealt were exemplary. They were courteous and very helpful. We have zero complaints about the staff. The accommodation, on the other hand, is a different story. The room was very small, and it was evident that renovations were underway. The painting was unfinished, as was the flooring. This, however, did not affect the quality of our stay. Our number one concern was the lack of a smoke detector in the room. It looked like it had been removed when the wall was painted and not replaced, or stolen. The mounting plate was there, but no detector. There also was no phone in the room. This was a concern since one of the instructions in case of fire was to dial zero. Another instruction in case of fire was to stay in the room, near the window, and wait for somebody to extract you through the window. The window was sealed shut and would not open. The heater/air conditioner was very loud, which resulted in a poor night's sleep. The “breakfast included” turned out to be a Jimmy Dean breakfast sandwich, which came with instructions on how long to microwave it back in our room, a yogurt, a store-bought muffin, a juice box, and a granola bar. All of these came neatly packaged in a paper lunch bag. Coffee was available in the little “kitchen”, which also had a microwave if you chose to have breakfast in the lobby. I guess you get what you pay for.
