After you have enjoyed Tapu, you should make time to discover the wider region of the North Island area. North Island boasts beaches and coastal plains, along with commonly visited North Island tourist sights like the art museums, nature museums and history museums. Visitors in this region of New Zealand can also enjoy snowboarding, skiing and tobogganing.

Thames is 17 kilometres to the south of Tapu and is home to the Goldfields Shopping Centre, Thames Historical Museum and Butterfly and Orchid Garden. The Rolleston Motel and Cotswold Cottage are just some of the apartment and hotel options in Thames. Alternatively, you could stay in Whitianga, 25 kilometres to the northeast of Tapu, where you can pick from the Sovereign Pier on the Waterways and Aotearoa Lodge.
