It’s difficult to rate travel experiences across different countries since each destination comes with its own unique challenges based on its economy. For example, air conditioning in Bali is pretty much non-existent. Similarly, in Costa Rica, it was hard to maintain a cool temperature since the AC turned off whenever we left the room. Again, totally understandable—the balcony breeze at times worked even better anyway. Expectations are always key! Cleanliness is also subjective—are the floors and bathroom clean? Yes. Are there perhaps water stains on the lamps? Sure, but you’re in Costa Rica, living Pura Vida. Who cares? That said, I absolutely loved this hotel—the location, food, ambiance, and staff were all fantastic. One minor inconvenience was that the room’s electricity was powered by keeping our key card plugged into the wall, but I also don’t expect hotels in Costa Rica to operate the same way as those in a thriving economy. Luxury is a matter of perspective. Regardless, I would definitely stay here again!! The breakfast buffet is amazing, and I highly recommend including it in your package to save money. The hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of Tamarindo, yet elevated on a hill, offering better views than other hotels in the area. The rooms are quite small, so I wouldn’t recommend booking for four people. Overall, I’m giving this hotel 4 stars—5 stars for me means absolute perfection.

Great hotel with excellent staff.

The room was spacious and clean with the features we like, comfortable bed and pillows, hairdryer, refrigerator, clean bedding and towels upon request. The hotel isn’t on the beach but the ocean view from our balcony was spectacular. There is an hourly shuttle to town and the beach club. The only negative aspect was there were 40 loungers around the pool but only 5 umbrellas. Due to the angle of the sun, there is no shade anywhere during the hottest time of the day. The best part of the experience was the staff, from the shuttle drivers, chamber maids, front desk, restaurant and pool. They interacted with us and had a positive impact on our stay.

This is our fourth time at the Wyndham Tamarindo. I understand it is under new management, and although the setting is wonderful and the pool and the beach club are great, some of the services have deteriorated. The bus service to town and the beach is now every hour instead of every half hour. Sometimes, there are more people than seats, and individuals have to wait for 20 minutes for the bus to return for a pickup, or people are sitting in the aisles or sitting too many to a seat. This is NOT safe. We asked for a lamp for our bedside table. We never got one. One day we had to ask for clean towels as the room had not been cleaned.

I was told a bottle of wine would be brought to the room but never came even after a reminder. Our TV remote did not work. Once that problem was solved they told us the TV was only in Spanish. Overall we enjoyed the hotel. A great pool, fun happy hour, beautiful view and a shuttle bus to Tamarindo that was very convenient.

The people are so rude, unprofessional, not helpful at ALL, they don’t know anything about their own area. They are quick to over charge you and there’s zero hospitality. Even if you speak to them in Spanish they are still illiterate. Never going back again.

I enjoyed staying here as it was out of the busy downtown core. The free shuttle provided was very convenient and easy to use. The pool was very nice with view. Loved sitting out on the balcony at sunset. The only complaint is the cost of the food was very expensive. The breakfast buffet was always stocked and great options.

The pool and view are beautiful, but our stay was a true nightmare. The first night we arrived, we had dinner at the restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was good. Around 7:30, the restaurant and patrons started being attacked by giant flying grasshoppers landing on our tables and on our bodies. They continued throughout our walk through the lobby to our room. The next morning we witnessed a couple being attacked while heading to the elevator. The man said one giant grasshopper had flown at him and knocked his glasses off his face. We left the property and headed to the beach club which is included in the hotel amenities. The beach club was very nice. We left after a bit and walked into town. We asked other hotels if they had a problem with flying grasshoppers and they did not. That night we made sure we were in our room by 5:30, and We moved hotels the very next day. The employees at the hotel, except for one waiter and the bartender at the pool bar, do not represent Pura Vida as in other hospitality areas we have experienced. The place is very nice looking but it’s far away from everything up 3 very steep hills. The hotel website should warn potential guests that it is home to these giant flying grasshoppers,. Im not sure if its the area or the particular lighting at the restaurant that attracts them, as it was not an issue at the hotels closer to the beach.

Expedia misrepresented this property online, stating it was a 15 min walk to beach. We are fit but walking down the three steep hills and to the beach was 25 mins. Walking back would more difficult because of steep, narrow roads. There were few walkable roads nearby without doing hills. Had we known this we would have rented a beachfront hotel. Pool & view were standouts. However there was very limited shading by pool. Internet was horrible. Food was ok though the same everyday at breakfast. Horrible drinks by poolside. People who worked at resort were very nice and accommodating. Shuttle service ran on the hour and were sometimes filled. More frequent shuttle service would have been nice.
