A beautiful classic old hotel on the waterfront. I was so surprised - and delighted - to be upgraded to a sea view room with a balcony, which I availed of, even though it was December. The bar and restaurant staff were so courteous. The room was gorgeous. It was all a perfect start to my holiday in Italy!

The staff barely speaks English so it was a little challenging. Also the reception desk asked me if I would like to leave a tip for the staff as an extra charge to me. I was surprised by this since gratuities and VAT taxes are usually included in Europe. It seems everyone is begging for tips and gratuities these days, I was not happy being put on the spot about tipping. This is not usual in Europe. There is a lot of confusion at this hotel with the staff as well as Trieste in general due to the language barrier.
