LOCAL FACILITIES & AMENITIES IN BRIEF
Despite its population (around 550) Sanday is a thriving island. Rich agricultural land produces top
quality beef cattle. Although agriculture is the mainstay of the economy, tourism and increasingly
distance working are growing features. The name Sanday reflects the miles of sandy bays and beaches.
Wildlife is abundant and well-conserved. With a little knowledge and patience, you’ll see rare birds &
flora and if you’re lucky, otters, orca and other wildlife in the clean, rich seas.

Sanday has a dynamic social and cultural scene. Visitors can enjoy our heritage centre, craft hub, artists
workshops, archaeological sites, outdoor pursuits, beach walks, cycling, wildlife, photography and more. There are numerous organised events throughout the year such as fishing trips, agricultural show, lectures, dances/ceilidhs, lighthouse & wildlife tours. The friendly community also welcomes
visitors to regular community clubs and events such as our fitness, craft, music and dance classes.

Island facilities include a swimming pool, fitness centre, play park, general store & village shop a short walk from here , two
hotels/pubs offering meals and takeaways. We have a post office, but no bank or police.
