February The Wrong Time of Year for Steamboat
We were looking forward to seeing the North Umpqua and doing some hiking and fishing. The weather was pretty cooperative and mild for Oregon in February, but it wasn't the best trip:
1. The Inn was closed for the season. We reserved a cabin but didn't realize that ALL services would not be available. They mentioned their main dining room being closed but it could be clearer that food of any kind would not be available.
2. The gift shop was closed for inventory, so even snacks could not be purchased. The closest market and dining options were 20 miles away. And very limited.
3. Sadly, the North Umpqua hiking trails were mainly closed do to blow down and landslides from the burns of a couple of years. It's such a gorgeous place and that was a huge disappointment. Also, the Closest Ranger Station was closed during the week. Not the best.
4. The cabin we stayed in was nice, modern and faced the Umpqua River. But no wifi. No internet. Thankfully we didn't bring the kids along...they would have rebelled! And no DVD player. It could be that the Inn itself had those services but it was closed.
Next time, we'll plan a better time to go. It's worth it for the scenery and the area is supposed to be top notch for fishing. And proximity to Crater Lake is a plus if you've never been. FYI: Diamond Lake is close by and has a people mover and sliding hill to keep kids entertained.
