The Impossible Dream | Historic Windmill with 360° Deck & Secret Library

Situated in the beautiful Rosebud River Valley, The Impossible Dream is a one-of-a-kind windmill guesthouse with an extraordinary history.

Since 1978, this windmill was a familiar landmark in Dead Man's Flats, just outside Canmore, Alberta. When plans were made to demolish it to make way for condos, the windmill was given a second chance. It was carefully moved to Rosebud, where it underwent an extensive four-year renovation and transformation into the unique guesthouse you see today.

The result is a space that blends its history with thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and plenty of surprises.

Step out from the second-floor bedroom onto the 360° wraparound upper deck and take in beautiful rural views in every direction. Look north toward the cliffs of Rosebud, east toward cattle grazing on the hills, and west toward the rooftops of our quiet hamlet. Enjoy your morning coffee, watch the changing light, and experience what quiet really feels like.

A pull-down ladder in the bedroom leads to a secret third-floor room—the Blue Library. With cedar plank floors, plastered walls, exposed wood beams, and a comfortable wingback chair, it’s a cozy hideaway made for reading, thinking, dreaming, or simply escaping for a while.

Back on the second floor, the octagonal bedroom creates an intimate and peaceful space for a good night's rest. The memory foam mattress and north/south-facing windows allow for a comfortable cross breeze.

A custom-designed spiral staircase, built by Rosebud artisans, connects the bedroom to the main floor. The staircase features substantial 2.5-inch-thick wood treads, locally sourced from an Alberta sawmill.

The main floor has everything you need for a comfortable getaway. The kitchen features a Wolf stove and European beechwood countertops, while hand-hewn oak flooring and Douglas fir beams add warmth and character. The ottoman also opens into a single sleeper.

The bathroom is another unique feature, with a custom-built tadelakt shower. This ancient Moroccan technique uses natural black olive oil soap to seal hand-polished lime plaster, creating a beautiful, seamless finish. A soft-close barn door completes the space.
