Some excellent staff - special mention to guest relations manager Duati, who was so welcoming. Great breakfast buffet - though some service issues and the restaurant layout is a bit cramped Rooms in the heritage wing spacious and very comfortable Swimming pool is a serious problem - the water was filthy for 4 days, ranging from slightly murky to green and cloudy. This is unacceptable for a hotel of this standard. It was one of the facilities I looked for when booking the hotel given the April temperatures in Kolkata, but there was no way I was swimming in that swamp Location is good for people wanting to experience the old colonial centre of Calcutta - amazing architecture and street life all around, but not for the faint hearted or those who prefer things sanitised. The hotel design does not do the old Great Eastern's heritage justice - and it is very sad that the original hotel facade is still barricaded up after what must be close to a decade now. These are incredible buildings that deserve some care and respect for their history - most are now decrepit but this one should have been restored as part of the hotel rebuild
