In 1829, Scottish navy surgeon Thomas Braidwood Wilson discovered Denmark, naming it after his former medical teacher Dr. Alexander Denmark. Tourism has been big in the town since World War Two, when American soldiers based in Albany would visit. The tourists still flock here today, entranced by its natural beauty and diverse attractions.

Denmark has many great beaches, from Peaceful Bay and the green canopies of Bibbulmun Track to Lights Beach, a surfing and swimming beach with rock pools, granite boulders and tall cliffs. But the most popular one is Greens Pool at William Bay National Park, 15km west of Denmark. Here, the emerald sea is calm, the sand is a perfect white and the pool is sheltered from the rest of the ocean by clusters of big boulders. Speaking of boulders, a walk over the headland will take you to Elephant Rocks, huge cracked rocks that look like a herd of elephants parading through the water. While you’re around, make sure you explore the rest of William Bay National Park. You’ll find tall karri trees, wetlands, peppermint scrub and wildflowers all spread across 1734 hectares.

Be sure to visit Valley of the Giants, which took its name from its forest of 400 year-old red tingle trees. The Tree Top Walk will take you on a 40m-high journey through a forest of these massive beauties, without damaging their delicate roots. Take a Forest by Night tour to see this incredible ecosystem under the stars, in the company of nocturnal critters.

Check out the art galleries and shops in the heart of Denmark’s rustic town centre, explore the lovely streets and parks, or drop into a coffee shop. For something a little different, visit Denmark Dinosaur World, which has heaps of dinosaur skeletons including the only T-Rex skeleton in Australia, as well as a bird and reptile park. Get lost – literally – in Denmark Maze, a bush labyrinth where entry is a gold coin donation. Visit Whale World to see Australia’s last whaling station or Denmark Animal Farm and Pentland Alpaca Stud to get close to some local wildlife.
