Holidays To Nepal

A dream destination for hikers and explorers who long to climb Mount Everest and socialise with the Sherpas, Nepal is a small country that sits between India and Tibet.

It's said that conversation is a national sport here—and as the birthplace of Buddha and home of the world’s most famous mountain, there’s plenty to discuss. Fly into the legendary Kathmandu, the subject of a popular Bob Seger song and the nation's capital city, and let Nepal holiday packages introduce you to this ancient land. Find your nirvana in the villages, trails, lodges and temples—or maybe a yak farm. We won’t judge.

Things to Do in Nepal

From Kathmandu, the country is your oyster with one of Wotif’s Nepal car hire options. Visit the small western city of Pokhara outside the capital to see Mahendra Gupha, a limestone cave known as the "house of bats", and the Bindhyabasini Temple. Also west of the capital is the Swayambhunath complex, a hilltop religious retreat comprised of trees, temples, a museum, a library and 365 steps leading to and from the main temple. The beauty of a Nepal holiday is most prominent in the mountains, however, so head out to the north-central region, Annapurna, to enjoy the well-conserved ecology and visit the Natural History Museum. From there, go to Ghandruk to learn about the rug-weaving industry and solve the puzzle of the town's alleyways—and reward yourself when you find a cafe.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Nepal holidays offer shopping at the many bazaars throughout the country. Collect prayer flags in the Kathmandu city square and browse the stores for hiking and trekking gear, then head to the Thamel neighbourhood for even more shops. In Bhaktapur, you'll find pottery, weavings, brass sculptures, urns and musical instruments. Higher in the mountains, the commercial centre of Chainpur celebrates the crafts of the country with village markets.

Nepal feeds its tourists and its citizens well: Curry, lemon, chili pepper and butter are flavour staples. Dine in the lodges on the hiking trails, teahouses, taverns and museum cafes. Don't forget to stop at a street cart or tiny diner for juju dhau (buffalo milk curd with spices, coconut and cashews), roasted corn or lentil soup. For a more hearty meal, learn to fish in Wana Chainpur or buy a bowl of Sherpa stew. Other fare, such as Thai, Indian and Italian, can be found in the cities.

Book Nepal packages in the late fall to experience the country’s most famous festival, Dashain. During this 15-day celebration, the party goes late into the night. Campfires, dances, ceremonies and toasts of traditional, homemade Khukuri rum are part of the fun. In Kathmandu and other urban areas, you'll always find beer, wine and conversation at the pubs. And no matter where you are, the natural scenery provides ample sunset-watching opportunities—just ask a local where the best spots are.
