Considering the hotel is over 100 years old, the building is in great condition and the decor is historic yet charming. The rooms and furniture are a decent in terms of size and quality. However the lack of air conditioning and the poor sound isolation makes staying in the exterior facing rooms very unpleasant. Loud birds cawing into the early hours of the morning, patrons from the bars and restaurants below, and blaring music from passing vehicles make it anything but relaxing. You have to make a choice, hot room or loud room. There is a ceiling fan but it was too loud to sleep with. I don’t particularly enjoy being woken up at 9am from someone blasting music from the car that’s audible on the 4th floor, windows open or not. The staff are nice, and perhaps if you can get a good deal the hotel is a nice stay. I personally would not return.

It was car week in Monterey so the cost of hotels was a little high in the area so we struggled to find a hotel in budget The outside of the hotel looked very grand and impressive . The reviews were decent enough The inside was however run down and in need of some upkeep, love and attention . Was a bit noisy as was right on the road but we slept ok . Wouldn’t stay there again

This was listed as an historic property but didn’t realize no ac in room had a standing fan and the windows open to provide ventilation. Street noise late into the night and early morning was disruptive to sleep. Bathroom had small vanity with no room to place toiletries in the bathroom. Valet service was a struggle and got different instructions from front desk and valet on how to proceed. When leaving front desk had our room checked out already which maybe why maids tried to enter in morning while we were still there. Also they said they texted the valet to bring car after a 20 min wait went to front desk and no one had texted valet. Would not recommend even though location was great lots of shops restaurants and wharf walkable.

Nothing about this place is worth a visit. It is extremely dirty; you would think it was abandoned. Carpet is moldy and stained. It’s a maze to get to your room. I killed a handful of bugs in a short time I was there. Spider webs on windows and corners. Bed had no integrity. Room is stuffy. Parking is trash. Run. Ended up leaving with no refund and booking Marriott across the street. It was so awful I didn’t even care how much Marriott was and that I was losing money on Monterey Hotel.

Hotel Monterey

Monterey Hotel is in a perfect location right near the Fisherman’s wharf, and on a Main Street. It is a very safe location. There’s two sides, the historic side and the more updated side. Unfortunately it was a full house and we were on the historic side which just could use a bit sprucing up. The room was clean and bathroom perfect, but the mattress needed to be replaced (a few years ago). We enjoyed our stay and would return here, just next time we will book in advance so that we can request the updated side.

Carpets all need to be cleaned. The whole hotel and the “historic” room I stayed in was run down. Not the charming old, but run-down old where the light fixtures are falling off the wall and the wall outlets cannot hold a plug in place. Old and run down fixtures as well.
Had to take see my laptop to hold the plug in place.

The hotel staff were very helpful and efficient. The room was lovely and comfortable. But we were not expecting how loud the area is - lots of yelling and laughing, etc. on the street well into the night. Maybe staying on a different side of the building would be helpful.

The room we were given was directly above the street, the backside to some businesses under us. Very Loud garbage trucks and delivery trucks in the wee hours of the morning, along with a steel plate in the road outside our room that sounded like gunfire every time a car crossed it. The saving grace was the pub Crown and Anchor one block away. The food was excellent along with the service and fair pricing
