Horrible sewer gas smell in apartment from bathroom made stay impossible
My sole reason for giving this unit such a low rating is directly the result of horrible smelling sewer gas coming up from the drain pipe in the shower from the bathroom of the larger bedroom. The entire apartment was full of the smell and it was mildly nauseating. We immediately opened all the windows to attempt to air out the apartment.
I don't know how we got to sleep with the smell (exhausting from travel??), but we did end up staying the first night. In the morning the smell was limited to my room. We again left all the windows open while we were out for the day in Milan. I also placed a wet towel at the base of the door leading to the bathroom as well as wet toilet paper over the drain, to see if that would keep the smell to the bathroom.
Upon returning, the smell was gone from the main living area but was still present in the larger bedroom.
We then called the apartment contact and let them know we were going to be leaving the unit and cutting our stay short as the smell was unbearable. We left the keys in the apartment and began hunting for a new place to stay.
Upon arriving at the building, we had disaster of a time getting into the apartment. We arrived to early to check-in, but did locate the building and find where the unit was. We were given a tip on where we could check our bags, which we did, and we went out for the afternoon.
We got back to the apartment after dinner at around 7:30 and a door to the hallway where the apartment was was now closed and locked. We we now unable to get to the apartment door. We sat in the landing area off the elevator and began calling Altido. After several attempts we reached a helpful person who explained that the building attendant had locked the door and there was no-one there to let us in but that he would see what he could do and that we would get a call back.
After waiting for nearly an hour and receiving no callback and being unable to reach anyone at the number we were given (it was after 8PM at this point) I decided to find us a hotel room for the evening. I found one relatively close and reserved a room.
Just as we were leaving the building an employee from Altido showed up. He had motorcycled all the way over from wherever he was to get us the key. Bravo! I explained we had just reserved a room and he nicely said that Altido would reimburse us for the cost (~230 US). We thanked him and headed for the apartment and he headed back home.
