Close to the tube station and not ridiculously expensive which we our main priorities, but the stairs were very difficult to manage (up to the 4th floor) and the water in room is non potable. Didn’t expect either of those things. Made our stay a bit difficult.

The staff were all lovely and attentive, and I could never complain about the cleanliness of the room. My one gripe as a budget traveller is that there was no elevator, and I was on the fourth floor. This is likely on me for not reading up on that specific amenity, but with a massive suitcase, I was pretty hard put upon to get safely to my room. The stairwells get progressively more narrow, so getting my suitcase to the top was incredibly tough. If you're going for the single budget room, I'd recommend either packing lightly or spending the extra money for a room on a lower floor. One wall of the shower stall had a bit of a crack in it, but no water leaked and the bathroom was very clean. I think this is a fairly old hotel, but the breakfast was hearty and the rooms quiet. For a safe place to sleep near Paddington Station on a budget, I'd still recommend it.

Well, where to start? With the non existent customer service when we arrived, or the surly begrudging nature of the staff when asked to help with luggage? Add to this the bathroom, so badly configured that it was impossible to sit on the loo without having to tuck one’s legs right under the sink!….plus nowhere to hang clothes apart from a 6 inch piece of metal piping affixed to the wall, sporting 2 coat hangers, masquerading as a wardrobe! The room was also so small there was nowhere to place luggage but on the beds, together with a minute fridge sitting on the floor opening to the wall, making it impossible to use!! Thankfully another hotel a few doors down the road provided us with slightly better accommodation after the first night, for the remainder of our stay!

Enjoyed our stay at the Shakespeare Hotel. It wasn’t a major issue, but there are certainly some accessibility issues for people who have difficulty with mobility. Other than that, the hotel, staff and surrounding area was nice.

Cannot recommend

Location is amazing. But the room shakes because of the train, there is no AC, and the bathroom has mold because the vent doesn’t operate. If you’re used to a hostel this is fine.

The location is super! It's on a quiet street, yet only 3 mins walk to Paddington Train Station and to many great restaurants and fast food. It's close to Hyde Park and Kensington Palace. The building looks quite decent and nice from the outside, but the property inside is rather old and room is extremely small. There's no air conditioning! Air circulation is not good.

There was no lift and we had to haul our suitcases two floors up. Our room was small and that was expected. The two beds were smaller than twin size but comfortable for us who were kind of petite in size. The bathroom was very small. I can imagine larger size persons would have difficulty just trying to be seated on the toilet. The soap dispenser was set about the toilet paper roll so inevitably soap dripped onto the toilet paper. The design of the sink made it very difficult to wash your face without splashing about half of the water on the floor. The shower water drained slowly but the hotel fixed this issue on the next day. There was no air conditioning and was in stuffy and hot at night.

Check in was basic, had to carry suitcases up to 3rd floor which was 5 levels of narrow dirty stairs. Definitely not for those with mobility issues. No lift. Tiny room for 3 to share. Tiny shower/toilet. Window opened only a few inches, very hot and stuffy in room. Scaffolding outside with workmen outside your windows, we were not advised of this. No way to exit if there was a fire in stairwell. No milk left for tea and reception wouldn’t bring it up. Housekeeping gone. Not particularly cheap for such basic facilities. Wouldn’t stay here again.

I loved the storage option for my luggage, but did not know when booking that the property was under renovations. The entire faced was covered in scaffolding and the rooms were not quite as pretty as the pictures. It was fine since we were out and about all day and only really there to sleep, but for such an important once and a lifetime trip, I expected more than the photos provided. Additionally, I would have liked to know there was no air conditioning in the rooms or elevators in the building. Not fun carrying luggage up for very narrow flights of stairs after a day walking about London.

Great hotel in paddington.

This is a little gem of a hotel in Paddington - clean and comfy rooms in one of the many older style hotels in this area. My room was on the top floor - quite a climb and the room as small it was perfect for as a solo traveller and worth the price. I will stay here again.

Nice low end hotel in convenient area to trains/tube, restaurants and park. Only negative comment is that the room didn’t have potable water. Unusual for downtown London. I couldn’t even brush my teeth first night and morning because no usable water in room. Hotel Could at least provide a bottle of water when tap water not potable.

Honest Review

Rooms are small and cramped , even for 2 people. The tube runs directly under the Hotel so the floors and walls vibrated all night until midnight making getting any sleep rough. Uncomfortable sleeping conditions, noisy and hot with no A/C and window would not open to help cool the room.

Booked a first floor room months in advance because my husband has mobility issues. We were put in a 3rd floor room. The property has no elevator. Some of the staff was rude. Also was told we would have 4 twin beds. We had 2 twins and a very squeaky bunk bed that was unstable.
