Our week in Hilton Head got off to a rough start. After a 14-hour drive from Cleveland (with a stop to visit friends) and picking up groceries on the way in, we arrived to find the condo hadn’t been cleaned—sand on the floors, an unmade bed, and dirty towels left behind.Security also didn’t have our names for a guest pass, which made us wonder if Tom knew we were coming. We contacted Tom and VRBO right away regarding the condition. Tom did try to reach the cleaning crew, but since it was around 9:00 on a Saturday, we understood they wouldn’t be able to come that night.We were basically offered three options: tidy up ourselves and wait for the crew the next day, cancel with a refund and find another place, or Tom would cover a one-night stay at the nearby Siesta hotel. We chose the hotel, which we appreciated, though traveling with our dog and unloading everything for one night wasn’t ideal—we would have much preferred to settle into the condo. Tom also mentioned how expensive the hotel was, which felt unnecessary given the situation.The next morning, the condo was cleaned, and we moved back in by early afternoon after repacking and settling in again. We also had to follow up once more to get our gate pass from security, which was eventually resolved.After that, everything went smoothly. The condo is well equipped—especially with beach gear—and the bed was comfortable. The décor is a bit dated, and the couch isn’t the most comfortable, but overall the unit met our needs.
