Lovely position next to the cable car entrance. Beautiful gardens and the original part of the Quinta is lovely and full of antiques. The bedroom furnishings are a little tired and could benefit from tea & coffee making facilities. The pool area could also do with some redecoration/updating. Breakfast was plentiful with a varied buffet selection

Friendly staff, lovely hotel and great view

We stayed there for 7 days in September. It was a very good and relaxed stay . The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, always ready to help or answer a question. The room was great, the food was very good. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the location as well- nice setting and a lovely garden and you have a choice of bus, taxi or cable car to get to Funchal if you want . The only thing we were not convinced was the swimming pool. it needs some work. Other than that, lovely place and lovely people.

Beautiful old building with lovely gardens. Friendly reception staff. Rooms decor a little tired, could do with updating. Good breakfast with a nice selection every morning. Restaurant is pricey but the food was nice. Pool is freezing cold!

The hotel is located high above Funchal in a wonderfully peaceful location, surrounded by beautiful gardens with stunning views. It does mean a 30-35 minute trip by bus or taxi into the city. We chose to use the local busses of which there is a choice of 3, and are frequent and cheap. The staff were friendly, attentive and very helpful. Our room was spacious with a balcony overlooking the gardens and views of the sea; it was cleaned and beds re-maid daily. The beds were very firm and an extra armchair would have been welcome. We ate in the hotel restaurant on our first night and found it rather expensive. Given the rather isolated location there was limited choice of other cafe's or restaurants so chose to eat in the city most days.

Hotel is beautifully located and has potential but it does not deserve 5 stars being in current condition. It needs updating and more staff. Bar is never staffed and you have to run around looking for a waiter. Swimming pool has mould and jacuzzi does not work despite our remarks. Carpets remember a previous era .If you want to use a safe in your room ,you have to ask for a key which costs 1.5 euros per day (unheard of) .There is no coffee or tea facility in the room which normal is a case in 5star hotels. Hotel is located high on the mountain and surrounded by charming gardens which has sweetened our stay. However it deserves 3 stars at the moment although the owners could easily upgrade it with a bit of will and investment.

Historic quinta beautifully furnished with antigues plus lovely gardens. Indoor pool fine, all staff pleasant and helpful but need more staffing to cover snackbar bar drinks , tea coffee.

We have stayed many times at the Quinta Do Monte and will stay again. They have a beautiful garden, excellent views from the rooms, very nice food and friendly staff. The rooms are clean and well-presented, and the hotel is a short drive to the main town centre, Funchal.

I was a beautiful old building with lovely big terraced gardens- big enough to have a proper walk aound. I loved all the flowers and huge palms and tree ferns. The view from my balcony was magnificent. I enjoyed the the walk to the pool and sun terrace along the beautiful pergola The staff were very helpful and friendly but some, especially the waiters and chef seemed very stretched and were having to race around Quite often the bar was unattended. .However, the food in the dining room was very good with some Madeiran speciaities, Breakfast was large and delicious. The chamber maid Anita was lovely- patient and kind when I mislaid my keys. I liked the position of the hotel- it felt like being in the "mountains" but wsn't isolated because of the cable car, hotel courtesy bus and the buses in Monte village. My room and bathroom were large but the downside was that my room was cold- when I asked about this I was told they were having problems with the heating. BHowever, this woldn't ;reven me from returning to this place.

Perfect spot for quietness in the heat of Monte! With a 15 min bus ride you’re in the heart of Funchal! Amazing gardens and views and the swimming pool, to die for!

View was fantastic when sunny. Location at near top of mountain made for being in the clouds other days. Staff were nice and helpful, but hard to find in bar or lounges afternnon and evening. No coffee pot in room and hard to get elsewhere ...see prior remark. Hotel was fairly empty during my stay which was probably why staffing was low. Location is just next to Tropical Garden, tobaggon ride and air trolley/ tram, all of which are great things to do.

Lovely relaxing hotel

This hotel, as its name "Monte" suggests, is up a hill. But then Madeira is an island rising dramatically out of the sea, so the place is hilly. The view is fantastic, from the balconies that look initially over its own tropical gardens, then out over the official Tropical Gardens and down the hill to Funchal. The staff are great and try really hard to do whatever they can to help. Most have good english, and as with Portugal, if you are not fluent in Portuguese remember that French is the default second language which is a useful back up. Be warned, the hotel is not in Funchal and you will need use either the free hotel bus, taxis or the cable car to get from the hotel to town and back. Going down you can also use the wooden sledges, if you are brave enough, which will take you half the way. The hotel is relaxed, with big rooms, which are well cleaned and good balconies to sit on to enjoy the view. The restaurant is lovely, with a good range at breakfast, and dinner is either a buffet or a la carte, depending on your mood. Lunch can be had as well at the pop up restaurant they operate in the grounds. The hotel also offers the opportunity to dine at other sister hotels in the group with in house transport. I would describe this a traditional hotel, in a beautiful location, gorgeous wooden floors in the public areas. It has a pool, and a relaxation area but is probably not really suited to young children. I suspect we will be back.

Superb hotel, beautiful gardens,

We found the hotel staff to be most welcoming and attentive. The restaurant area had a lovely outlook and the breakfasts were a superb display of fruits, cereals, home made jams and honey. The variety of breads, varying cooked foods and fruit drinks/coffee and teas completed the display We had one a la carte dinner with wine, which was excellent, one buffet dinner which was good. As we were not half board we were disappointed when the restaurant went "buffet" and dropped the a la carte option. Hence we did not use the restaurant again as we found the buffet limited our choice and was over priced. We did have one of the lunch BBQs which was delicious and fairly priced.

This was a WONDERFUL experience. We had a magnificent view of the ocean from our room, and all the details (breakfast, room service, cleanliness) went above and beyond our expectations. The area is very peaceful and quiet, and it's so fun that the cable cars are right nearby!

Beautiful hotel in an amazing garden, very friendly staff... but unfirtunately no clue how this could get 5*. The rooms, swimming , hall ways are not in the best condintion for quite some time it seems. Matraces not comfortable with visible signs of where previous guest were sleeping/sitting. Bathroom visibly fixing latest damages in very unorofessional way, not really working old shower... very old carpets. But still you can get stunning view from your room for sliglty above 100€ per night price... so you happily stay in the end :)

Peaceful holiday in Monte

Relaxing 10 days in Madeira, very glad we chose this hotel in the hills away for the concrete jungle of hotels in Funchal. Cooler than the city, peaceful and quiet, great access into Funchal by bus, cable car and road. Delicious dinners and very nice, extensive breakfasts.
