Did you hear about that gigantic battle between Zeus, the Greek king of the gods, and the Titans? We hear it was a doozy. Herakles had to step in and help out when it all went down on Mykonos. We don’t know for sure, but we have a feeling the fight was over the local cheese. The argument is long over, but the cheese is still here—along with the island’s beautiful whitewashed buildings and a harbour you’ll want to post up in. Book one of Wotif’s flights to Mykonos and you’ll be saying “Oh, my Konos!” in no time.
Mykonos has a healthy public transport system, including a steady supply of buses. You can hail a taxi, though there aren’t many of them on the island. Want to explore the rest? Book one of Wotif’s car hire options and go hunting for Hercules on your own time.
If you book Mykonos flights that land in the morning, head to the capital of Mykonos Town (also known as Chora) and start exploring. Slug back a coffee in one of the cafes, then meander through whitewashed buildings and art galleries.
Arriving in the afternoon? Throw your bags into your Mykonos accommodation and go to the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos to see what was cool back in the BCE.
Should you show up after the sun has gone down, go straight to Mykonos Town—Agion Anargyron Street, specifically, where the bars and restaurants will keep you occupied for hours. Besides, it’s a proven fact that local liquor tastes better after dark. OK, we made that up, but it’s true.
Make a point of visiting “Little Venice”, a district of Mykonos Town. It sits right on the harbour, and if you do nothing else, join the townies to watch the sunset with a drink lodged firmly in your hand. And while we’re at it, make sure you scarf down some kopanisti mykonou. No, we can’t pronounce the name either, but it’s the local salty cheese. We love it and so will you.
