Formerly a military base used in World War II, Exmouth is a town that sits between the ocean and the inland canyons and ranges. One of the best reasons to visit is the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, a gorgeous stretch of turquoise waters that lap against white sands. Spanning a whopping 260km along the coast, the reef has many beaches along its way, with a number of them within reach of Exmouth. Town Beach is, unsurprisingly, the closest one to town and has lovely views of the sunrise and sunset, making this the perfect place for a morning or evening walk. If you’ve driven here in a 4WD, follow the marked trails on the beach and drive along the sand and surf. For the nudists among us, head to Mauritius Beach for the perfect opportunity for an all-over tan! If you’re more into traditional activities like fishing and surfing, Lighthouse Bay is the place to be. While you’re here, take the time to view the wreck of SS Mildura, a cattleship that was destroyed when it clipped the corals along the beach. Meanwhile, visit the Jurabi Coastal Reserve at low tide and you’ll be able to explore the beautiful rockpools, which are home to sea creatures like urchins, anemones, starfish and octopi.

No matter which beach(es) you choose to visit, it goes without saying that they all offer amazing opportunities for snorkelling and swimming! Peer through your goggles and the crystal clear waters at the colourful corals or simply enjoy the feeling of the salty waves against your skin. Ningaloo Reef is also one of the prime locations to see coral spawning, a rare event that occurs after the full moon in March or April, when corals release their eggs to the surface of the sea to reproduce. Be patient and you’ll soon see pools of pink, orange and red float to the surface, ready to be carried along the waves. If you’re lucky enough to be around during March to July, make sure you book a whale shark tour. These majestic creatures are the biggest of the sea and can grow up to 12m long. Don’t miss the chance to see them from a glass-bottomed boat, or if you’re game, swim with them!

While many come to enjoy the beaches and bays, that’s not all there is to Exmouth. Head to Cape Range National Park, which offers stunning views of arid valleys, flowing rivers and pale orange limestone cliffs. You’re sure to see many emus and kangaroos, and avid birdwatchers should check out Mangrove Bay, where birds roost and catch fish. Strap on your shoes and make a trek along the walking trails to see relics from the war, such as outposts and signal stations.
