Tucked away in the heart of Denmark's capital, Frederiksberg is an enchanting blend of cosmopolitan charm and serene green spaces, offering a perfect destination for a holiday. Technically a separate municipality but seamlessly integrated with Copenhagen, Frederiksberg stands out with its upscale atmosphere, regal history, and laid-back vibe. Whether you're looking for a relaxing city break, a family getaway, or a romantic retreat, this leafy district has something for everyone. Let’s explore why Frederiksberg should be on your holiday itinerary. A Touch of Royal Elegance Frederiksberg is often referred to as an “urban village” due to its wide, tree-lined boulevards, stately homes, and relaxed pace of life. Its roots date back to the early 18th century when it was established as a royal retreat, and that regal influence still permeates the area today. 1. Frederiksberg Palace: A Royal Residence At the heart of the district stands Frederiksberg Palace, a Baroque masterpiece built in the early 1700s by King Frederick IV as a summer residence. The palace sits atop a hill in Frederiksberg Park, offering stunning views of the surrounding gardens and the Copenhagen Zoo. Visitors can explore the palace’s grand interiors, where Danish monarchs once lived, or take a guided tour to learn about its fascinating history. From the opulent Rococo halls to the grand ballrooms, it’s a trip back in time to Denmark’s royal past. 2. Frederiksberg Gardens: A Green Haven Surrounding the palace is one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful parks, Frederiksberg Gardens. With its rolling lawns, picturesque lakes, and tree-lined pathways, the gardens are a favorite spot for both locals and visitors. Stroll through this sprawling oasis, enjoy a peaceful picnic, or rent a small boat to glide along the canals. In the summer, you’ll find locals sunbathing, reading, or simply enjoying the tranquility of the park. The gardens also provide a unique experience with its Chinese Pavilion, an exotic structure that was a favorite of the Danish royal family. Nearby, you'll find hidden grottos, small waterfalls, and even the chance to spot elephants from the neighboring zoo, which is partly visible from the park! A Cultural Hotspot Frederiksberg is not just about green spaces and royal history—it’s also a thriving cultural hub. With theaters, museums, and art galleries, the district offers a wealth of opportunities for those seeking a more refined cultural experience. 1. Cisternerne: A Subterranean Art Experience For something truly unique, visit Cisternerne, a contemporary art museum housed in an old underground reservoir beneath Søndermarken Park. The cool, cavernous space offers an atmospheric backdrop for avant-garde exhibitions, often featuring immersive installations that play with light, sound, and water. The blend of modern art and historical architecture makes this an unforgettable cultural experience. 2. Frederiksberg Theatre Lovers of the performing arts will be delighted by the Frederiksberg Theatre, a historic venue that showcases a wide variety of performances, from classical music concerts and ballet to contemporary drama and comedy shows. The theater itself, built in the 19th century, is a beautiful piece of architecture, offering an elegant night out in Frederiksberg. 3. The Storm P. Museum Another cultural gem is the Storm P. Museum, dedicated to the life and work of Danish cartoonist, writer, and humorist Robert Storm Petersen. Located near Frederiksberg Gardens, the museum celebrates Petersen's unique blend of satire, humor, and social commentary. It’s a small but quirky museum that provides insight into Danish culture and humor through the lens of one of its most beloved figures. A Food Lover’s Paradise Frederiksberg is a gastronomic hotspot, with a wide array of dining options ranging from cozy cafes to Michelin-starred restaurants. Whether you're in the mood for traditional Danish fare or international cuisine, Frederiksberg offers a little bit of everything, all with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. 1. Cafes and Bakeries Start your day at one of Frederiksberg’s many charming cafes, where you can sip on a freshly brewed cup of coffee while enjoying a kanelsnegle (cinnamon roll) or smørrebrød (open-faced sandwich). Local favorites like Hart Bageri offer delicious artisan bread and pastries, making them a must-visit for breakfast or a mid-morning snack. 2. Michelin-Star Dining For a more upscale dining experience, Frederiksberg is home to Mielcke & Hurtigkarl, a Michelin-recommended restaurant nestled within the Royal Horticultural Garden. Known for its innovative, nature-inspired menu, the restaurant offers a culinary journey through Denmark's seasonal flavors, with dishes that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. 3. Frederiksberg’s Food Markets If you prefer something more casual, head to Frederiksberg Allé, a lively street lined with restaurants, or visit one of the local food markets. Torvehallerne in nearby Nørrebro is a favorite for foodies, offering a variety of Danish and international delicacies. From fresh seafood to organic vegetables and gourmet cheese, the market is a great place to sample some of Denmark’s finest produce. Shopping in Style Frederiksberg is a shopper's dream, offering everything from high-end fashion boutiques to local design stores. Clean, safe, great for children and teens
Attractively decorated and easy for our family of six to settle into. Black-out curtains kept out the light any time we wanted. Windows let in light and air when desired. Washer and dryer always a plus.
