As you head south from Bangkok, Chumphon is the first city you reach that's officially considered southern Thailand. In town, the National Museum is not to be missed, offering a great insight into the local province. For a spectacular view, climb Khao Chao Mueang, the highest point in the area. Just head to Sairee Beach, and follow the concrete path at the back of the beach. It takes you up a short track winding about a kilometre to the top of the mountain. Take a breath and enjoy the panoramic views across the archipelago and surrounding bays. If you want to see more history, the most famous temple in the region is Wat Pradoem. It's an archaeological site in old Chumpon, a rare sandstone Buddha from the Srivijaya Period was discovered here as well as a Chedi that's believed to contain some of Lord Buddha's bones.
