We booked the property two and a half weeks before our Memorial Day weekend trip. At that time, there weren’t many places left to book , but still a few. This was the best one we could find from what we could tell. So, we booked it quickly. Two and a half weeks later, after driving four hours to this rental in Cocoa Beach - receiving confirmation emails and even check-in instructions. We typed in the code to enter our rental, opened the door, and found someone else’s belongings in the living areas - a backpack and a laptop. We decided we’d better call the owner to see what was going on. It was well after our check-in time, but there was clearly someone else in our rental. So, we called. No answer. Then texted. The owner responded and said he was busy on a conference call. Then he texted us and said that someone else had booked the property and somehow VRBO allowed us to book it as well. We asked him to call so we could sort this out. He continued texting us. Never picked up the phone to call us. He did manage to refund us our money 100% which took 24 hours to arrive. We ended up finding a hotel to stay in. It could’ve been worse, but then again, it could have been much better. I don’t understand how we could have double-booked a property and not find out until arriving at the property. I also don’t understand how an owner/manager of a vacation rental business could not have the customer service skills to pick up the phone and call us and talk to us about our options. We were literally 4 hours away from home with a car full of luggage and beach items and nowhere to go. We did the work and found a new place, a hotel room, by ourselves. It was an extremely awkward and unfortunate situation.
