Local beauty spots St Bees beach – a charming, pebble beach with beautiful views of the Irish Sea. A great place for a relaxing walk along the shore or a picnic. Wast Water – a stunning, remote lake surrounded by some of England's highest peaks — from here you can tackle Scafell and Scafell Pike, the two tallest mountains in England. The lake is also great for paddle boarding and swimming. Ennerdale Water – a quieter lake with plenty of walking trails and picnic spots. Great for nature lovers looking to explore the wilderness. Ennerdale also has some of the darkest skies in England, so it’s perfect for stargazing. Loweswater – one of the smaller lakes in a very scenic area. Attractions: Ratty miniature steam train – a fun and scenic train ride through the stunning Eskdale valley. Calder Abbey – a monastic site since the 12th century. The ruins are not open to the public but are visible from the nearby road or footpath. Muncaster Castle – a fascinating historic castle set within beautiful gardens. Be sure to visit the bird of prey center and the weapon’s hall. Rosehill Theatre - a gorgeous local arts venue which hosts local and traveling music, theatre and comedy artists. You can find out what’s on by checking their website: https://www.rosehilltheatre.co.uk/whats-on
Local Walks Afternoon strolls River Calder – wander along the river and take in the sights of the Calder Abbey. St Bees beach – wander along the beach and back, or make a loop through the town or by the golf course. ~2.5miles Blengdale forest – a quiet forest loop, relatively unknown to tourists. Park in the lay-by by the river Bleng (What3Words: dramatic.elated.expensive). ~3.5 miles. Wast Water via the boat house – park at the Sawmill café or by Cinderdale Bridge, walk down to the lake via Easthwaite farm and follow the footpath down to the lake. Make a loop by joining the road by the Youth Hostel and follow the road back to the car park. A good day’s walk Ennerdale Water – a loop around the lake. Mostly flat but with some rough terrain. ~6 miles. St Bees to Whitehaven via coastal path. Park at St Bees beach and follow the coastal path all the way to Whitehaven. You can then get the train back to St Bees. ~6 miles. Dent from Lowther forest. Park on the Cold Fell road and walk through the forest, down into the valley and up Dent. Hikes Keen to bag a Wainwright? You have so many to choose from! Some of our favourites include: Crag Fell from Ennerdale. Short and sharp on its own, or link up with other near-by fells. Burnbank Fell, Blake Fell and Gavel Fell – a lovely hike overlooking Loweswater. ~8 miles. Yewbarrow, Kirk fell, Great Gable, Scafell or Scafell Pike are all accessible from Wasdale. The highest mountain in England is just a stone's throw away, but there are many other Wainwrights to conquer from Wasdale — they vary in difficulty and length.
Big adventurous hikes For experienced hikers with the right gear. Steeple (819m) and Pillar (892m) from Ennerdale – a fabulous hike 10+ miles. You can make it longer or short depending on where you ascend/descend the ridge. Great Bourne to Haystacks from Ennerdale – breathtaking views over Crummock Water and Buttermere. Park in the Bowness car park in Ennerdale. ~14 miles. Ennerdale Horseshoe – essentially both of the previous routes joined together you’ll have done the Ennerdale Horseshoe, one of the most demanding routes in the Lakes. ~22 miles. Mosedale Round – includes many of the Wasdale peaks. We like to park by Yewbarrow and start there. Traditionally the round includes Kirk Fell, Pillar, Scoat Fell, Steeple, Red Pike, Yewbarrow but you could even include Great Gable and Scafell Pike, or start at Kirk fell and work your way to Scafell Pike. Please make sure you research your route and take appropriate equipment and a map.
Wild Swimming We’re lucky enough to be close to some of the best wild swimming spots in the country. Here are some of our favourites: Wast Water is an unrivalled favourite. Parking can be tricky in the summer, so we’d recommend heading out early. Wast Water is the deepest lake in England, and therefore very cold. Wasdale fairy pools can be found walking up the valley along the river towards Great Gable. These are small mountain pools along the river. Devoke Water can be found along the Birker Fell road, there’s a small parking area opposite the path to the lake. The lake is around 15 mins walk from the parking area. This is a nice alternative to busier lakes. The River Esk boasts crystal clear mountain water. The river is particularly deep near the Dalegarth Campsite, which makes for lovely swimming. Stanley Ghyll waterfall is also worth a visit if you’re in the area — you can sometimes swim at the bottom of the waterfall, or at the top, which is a relatively unknown spot. St Bees beach offers lovely swimming, but we recommend you check the Safer Seas app to check water quality. If you walk along the coastal path towards Whitehaven for about a mile, you’ll find the quieter cove of Fleswick Bay — another stunning spot for swimming in the sea. Loweswater is lovely, particularly in the spring. In the summer, it can be prone to algae blooms. The national trust car park is very small, so we’d recommend parking in an appropriate lay-by. All wild swimming is undertaken at your own risk.
Food and Drink Restaurants and Pubs White Mare Pub, Beckermet – a 1-minute walk! A lovely place for a drink, popular with locals, especially outside in the summer. They offer traditional pub food on some evenings. Wild Olive Restaurant, Gosforth – a 10-minute drive for the most fantastic pizza. Be sure to book as the restaurant isn’t huge, but they also offer takeaway. 019467 25999. Strands Inn, Nether Wasdale – micro-brewery on site, and they offer a fabulous Sunday lunch. 019467 26237. Bridge Inn, Sandton Bridge – cosy atmosphere and nice food. 01946 726221. Teza Spice Restaurant and Takeaway, Egremont – recently crowned the best Indian restaurant in the North West! 01946 823186 Coffee & Cake The Sawmill, Nether Wasdale – a lovely spacious cafe by the river. The perfect brunch spot after a morning swim in Wast Water. The Woodlands Tea Room, Santon Bridge – a lovely little café and gift shop, they do a very nice afternoon tea. Howling Wolf, Whitehaven – only a couple of years old, this is a fabulous coffee spot. They’re supplied by a local coffee roaster in Whitehaven and they’re famous for their incredible cinnamon swirls. The Moon and Sixpence, Cockermouth – a bit of a drive, but we had to include it, as we (humbly) feel that their coffee is the best in West Cumbria! The Cockermouth shop is very small, but do takeaway if you can’t get a seat. There are lots of lovely shops and other cafes to make a trip to Cockermouth worthwhile. Icecream Mawson’s Ice Cream Parlour, Seascale – the best ice cream in Cumbria (in our opinion!) and it’s only a 10-minute drive away.
