The Fortress of Solitude is our family's private retreat in the Maritime Forest on remote and beautiful Bald Head Island. It is our home away from home and where we feel the most relaxed. We know you will, too. Centrally located on the island, you can take a 5 minute stroll (kids or groceries fit well in the wagon) to the Maritime Market for breakfast or groceries or a 3 minute cart ride to one of the convenient, beautiful, and empty beaches.
This new home looks like a Pottery Barn dream home. It features an open kitchen and living area. The kitchen has beautiful granite countertops, custom cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. We pride ourselves on how well-stocked the kitchen is - equipped for most any cook, and the dining room is bright and roomy. The living areas have beautiful bamboo floors. The master bedroom with king bed is also on the main living level. The bath features tile and granite with a large walk-in shower. Upstairs are two additional bedrooms, one queen and one with two full/twin bunk beds, plus a bathroom and full-size laundry. The crofter has a fourth queen bedroom and a full bath with its own private entrance, perfect for any Cousin Eddie in your life. Two great screen porches - one dining, one relaxing - give you choices in outside fun while still wearing your bedroom slippers. As described in more detail below, we have two golf carts, and a number of non-motorized transport options, including adult bikes, kid bikes, and a younger kid's scooter.
The Fortress of Solitude will also appeal to the entertainment enthusiast in the family. It features a large flat screen TV in the living room, complete with surround sound, a pair of speakers on each porch, AirPlay, a blu-ray player, and Wifi throughout the house and crofter. There are plenty of blu-rays or DVDs to choose from, but feel free to bring your favorites with you. There are additional TVs in the master bedroom and also the crofter. We are Dish Network people, and you'll love the viewing choices - never miss the game with the whole house DVR that allows you to watch a recorded show on any of the TVs.
More than the cooks and home theater lovers among us, this house is made for children. The bunk room upstairs has two sets of bunk beds, a small table and chairs, buckets of legos, blocks, cars, brio trains, puzzles, books, and dolls. There are even a couple of empty toy buckets made just for the toys from home of the more organized youngsters among us. Pack n play and highchair are de rigeur. The kitchen sports kids plates, cups, and cutlery; there are loads of kids movies to watch and stacks of family games in the hall closet. The garage has kids bikes, wagons, beach toys, kites, a scooter, and other outdoor toys. And, did we fail to mention the family of miniature lizards who like to sun on the outside decking? Hours of enjoyment. In short, relax... the half of your trunk you devote to non-essential kids' stuff when you go on vacation - leave it at home.
Spend pleasant days outside on the porches - one with comfortable seating for a morning coffee or afternoon wine glass and one dining porch that also boasts extra cooler space. Deer, birds and osprey have been spotted from the porches, so keep your eyes peeled.
There are two four person golf carts for exploring the island. There are adult bikes for 'splorin', short for exploring, a favorite Island activity. There are also beach chairs and a beach umbrella.
If you prefer, you can arrange your rental to include temporary membership at the Bald Head Island Club, which boasts a fun and serene pool (imagine water slide AND comfortable sun chairs), top of the line tennis facilities, and the fitness center. There is a new splash pad playground, Also in the Summer, Club activities for children are a highlight, and the club dining options are ideal for mid-vacay date night or dressy family brunch. We simply pass the weekly temporary membership fee directly on to you as the renter, if you choose. If not, there are miles of beaches waiting for some bare feet and several other restaurants to choose from - Mexican cantina, anyone?
The Fortress is our family home, and we have decorated and outfitted it as such. It is not a rental. It is most assuredly your relaxing home away from home in a beautiful and nearly magical setting. Come explore (or 'splore) it.

Perfect place for 2 couples with kids! Everyone had their own bedroom and bathroom. Plenty of room to gather. Plus the crofter was great for the teenage girls to have their own space. Communication with the rental agency was fast and super helpful! We would love to do this again! Highly recommend!

We have rented this house 2x and will continue to do so. It’s very clean with well appointed furniture. Excellent location near the market, so quick trips to get stuff is easy. The kids love the Crofter Bedroom and makes the entire house seem so much bigger. Thanks for letting us rent!

I’ve been visiting BHI for nearly 20, and this house was one of my favorites. The house was very clean, roomy, and private. The location next to the Market was so convenient, as it only took us a second to run up for things needed. The bedding / furniture was comfortable and high quality. A Wonderful week in November

Bald Heaf Island, and The Fortress of Solitude did not disappoint. Great house with a layout that accommodates room for dinner and card games and puzzles but also private space and cozy corners for reading. The Fortress is well equipped, especially the kitchen. We were in need of nothing to make some delicious meals and build fond memories!

Quiet and Relaxation at its best on BHI!

The Fortress of Solitude is just that- a quiet place to shut out the noise and busyness of the city and just relax, recharge, and enjoy all that Bald Head has to offer from a central location. We've been to this property before and it suited our needs so well, that we booked it again! Our family of 8 (2 little ones, 2 teens, mom/dad, and grandparents) had a wonderful week of beach visits, strolls around the island, and playing games around the table. The house is clean, comfortable, well-equipped, and we'll be back!

Fortress of Solitude was a delight for our extended family of 7. House layout is marvelous with plenty of beds and baths for space. Two golf carts and bikes allowed us to remain out and about for most of the days. Kitchen is well stocked and starter kits from BHI services go pretty far (thank you!). We had a terrific time. A magical getaway

From start to finish this stay was a 12/10!! This beautiful home was SO CLEAN! Absolutely amazing house equipped with everything you need to cozy up and cook dinner at home, play games with family & friends or take the two golf carts for cruises around the island. Management company was so responsive and helped us with everything we needed (including booking an additional nights stay because we simply were not ready to go home)! We will be back Fortress of Solitude!!

Great house for a great price

Loved the house and location. Sleeps 12 people great for 2 families. The only bad thing I can say is the golf cart covers do not fit. Luckily it was just windy for us one day but on a rainy day could be an issue. They had toys, bikes, games, beach chairs and much more for you to use. We will be back next year!!!

House was cleaned and well equipped. Golf carts worked poorly, beach chairs were very old and only one bike available. If this items had been provided, experience would have been much better. Owner and management very helpful.

Clean and beautiful home, perfect location

The process could t have been easier and it was great to see that the house was exactly as represented in the listing. Very clean home with all the amenities we needed during our stay. Although we didn’t use the crofter, I can see that this would have been great for those with more guests. We love staying in the Maritime Forest and this was the most ideal location, smack in the middle of the island and an easy walk to the grocery store and the new coffee shop. Our kids enjoyed the bikes and we made use of both golf carts. We hope to stormy here again the next time we visit Bald Head.

Fortress of Solitude for the win

House had everything we needed and we had a great week! Very well appointed other than one of the golf carts being slow as molasses. It was in the shop for 3 days and came out as slow as it was (which meant we had to deal with getting a rental) but the Bald Head Services earns an A plus for their customer service and response time! Just wish the house came with a club membership - won’t rent a house without it next time. Memberships were sold out! Love BHI!

Super location for super fun

We had a wonderful stay. The home was perfect for 6 of us-3 teens, 2 moms, and grandma-foe a quick getaway to Bald Head Island. We only had time to stay 2 nights (but we’d love to come back for longer), and appreciate the flexibility. We were able to check in early and use the golf carts, and everything was prepared so well for our arrival. It’s a comfortable home. The only issue we had (it’s a small one) was a bicycle chain that fell off a few times when one of our teens rode behind us while we drove a golf cart. We had a great time watching the UNC/Duke game on TV, with great reception and many channels to select. The furnishings were lovely and the beds were comfy and the kitchen and game closet were well stocked. Thanks for sharing your vacation home with us !

Perfect Home in the Perfect Spot

Bald Head Island is already a wonderful place to visit, but this home in particular lives up to its name. While it's on one of the "busier" through-streets on the island, it's still extremely quiet. The house itself is set back into the maritime forest, and there's plenty of seclusion and privacy in the home. The location is also very convenient for getting to the market. Sometimes we would simply walk instead of driving the included golf carts. The home itself is well equipped and comfortable for long stays, including plenty of cooking equipment, bedding, updated bathrooms, etc., as well as activities for families and children that we saw, though we were without our little ones for this trip. The owner and services company they contract with were responsive and very helpful to address our needs as they came up. You really can't go wrong with this property.

It was nice but did jot get a feeling of real clean Sheets in king had blood and over garage room also had blood on pillows and wall and no sheets Although the housekeeping dept rectified most issues it did not have a clean feeling in master bedroom bathroom Master bath had German roaches coming up from sheets wet drain maintenance came and sprayed Bathroom upstairs the shower did not drain and maintenance did come and fix the staff was wonderful and rectifying the situation but still was difficult on arrival to find all these things other than that I’d have to say it’s a very nice house I would rated probably a 3 1/2

Absolutely wonderful space!

PLENTY of room here!! My husband, four teenagers and I really enjoyed this beautiful, clean, and well cared for home. This was our first time to BHI, and we will absolutely stay here again! With the 2 four person golf carts, it was perfect for the older teens, and my husband and I. We also enjoyed the convenience of a short walk to the Maritime Market for breakfast, wood fired pizza, and drinks/snacks for the kids. While I cannot personally vouch for the bunk style beds, the king, and queen beds were all very comfortable, as was the bedding itself. We enjoyed taking turns on the bikes, and riding around the island. As it was only the beginning of the tourist season, we enjoyed the friendliness and waves from other residents, and especially the staff at The Bean Bar and Horizons restaurant. We spent some time in the Island Passage and Bald Island blues stores and found the clothing selection and staff fantastic! BHI and Fortress of Solitude are our new favorite places! Stay for Badwater race

Had a great time at a beautiful property. House was clean, comfortable, and in a good location. One downfall is that the listing stated there would be a pack and play but there wasn’t one. Contacted the property manager and one was delivered the next morning. Overall would highly recommend this property!!
