Lone Wolf Lodge - in Wallowa-Whitman Nat`l Forest
Lone Wolf Lodge was built in 2011 and renovated in 2019. It is a quiet, remote, nature lover’s location inside the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, on the way up Dooley Mountain. Being in the National Forest it is easy access to logging roads and almost endless hiking trails. Bring your ATV, hike to your heart’s content, or drive to the top of the mountain and enjoy the view.
The house sits on 10 acres of mountainside and stream bottomland. It has 2 downstairs bedrooms, one with a king size bed and one with a queen bed. It also has a large loft with 1 queen size bed, a queen pull out sofa sleeper and a full size futon. The single bathroom is large, containing a walk-in shower as well as the washer and dryer. A full kitchen is complete with a kitchen table that seats 6+, coffee maker, keurig, French press, stove, dishwasher, microwave, and side by side refrigerator. The kitchen is open into the living room which has seating for 8+ and a large-screen tv with a Roku for access to your own accounts with Netflix, Prime, Hulu, etc. The yard is fenced, with a rustic bench under the pines, to sit, listen to the stream gurgle, and watch as the sun comes over the mountain each morning. A stream runs just outside the fence behind the house, so children should be supervised when outdoors. Mule deer, wild turkeys, antelope, and elk have been seen on the hillside behind the house. Mountain lion, bear, and a wolf have been seen, on occasion, further up the road at higher altitude. The yard/drive has keypad access with ample parking and a carport space for 2 vehicles. Access to the house is by smart lock. A picnic table and gas grill are onsite for guests’ use. Due to forest fire concerns NO open fires are allowed!
Guests have the whole house and fenced yard to themselves. Keypad access is provided to driveway and to the home so guest can check in at their convenience.
We live on the East Coast so have limited availability but we have a local co-host in Baker that can assist you if needed.
Located in the National Forest, we are 14 miles from Baker City, 23 miles from the Steam Railroad in Sumpter via the Elkhorn Scenic Byway which passes Phillips Reservoir Recreation area, and 36 miles from Ski Anthony Lakes.
Baker City credit: Baker County Tourism Travel Baker County/Flickr Way over on the eastern edge of the state, Baker City is a total Oregon treasure. With a population of roughly 10,000, Baker City is a one-of-a-kind town that will blow you away. It`s been named one of the `Coolest Towns in America,` and once you visit, you`ll immediately understand why. There`s plenty to see and do here, from lounging at cafes and exploring the local shops to visiting historic landmarks and even golfing. The town is also home to the Geiser Grand Hotel, one of the most historic -- and notoriously haunted -- places in Oregon, making it a must-visit for all ghost hunters, historians, and adventure seekers.
Lone Wolf Lodge is on a rustic, remote, and quiet gravel road inside the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The road dead ends at the beginning of the Forestry Service`s logging roads. You can hike or ride ATVs on the logging roads through old growth timber all the way to the top of Dooley Mountain. Care should be taken to respect private property along the way and be cautious of steep drop offs and losing your way!
Note: We are on a community maintained road about 1 mile off the main road. Because of this and the mountainous location, 4-wd drive vehicles are suggested Dec thru March. At times, we get accumulating snow when Baker only gets a dusting.
For the security of our guests we have a video camera outdoors pointing towards the property access. Wifi is the fastest available at this rural location. Pings average around 28ms, download speeds around 74 to 124 mbps, and upload speeds around 30 to 70 mbps using Speedtest These speeds can vary with network congestion, but tend to be pretty consistent. Router is available to be restarted by guest if the need arises. The lodge also has a cellular signal booster installed, so tethering to your mobile hotspot is also a viable option for internet connectivity. During winter months it is recommended to have 4 wheel drive Due to the proximity of the stream, children MUST be supervised by an adult when outdoors. Due to forest fire danger, no open fires are allowed. Smoking may be done in the carport only. Smoking materials must be placed in the designated receptacle. Stice`s Gulch Rd is a gravel road. Please be courteous and drive slowly past the homes to limit the dust. During winter months 4-wheel drive is recommended.

Beautiful cabin, very private and peaceful.there is plenty of cooking wear and a great BBQ. The setting is awesome, I would see mule deer on the ridge line in the morning and cool breezes would blow down the hillside in the evenings. We really enjoyed the experience thank you for sharing this experience with us. I would definitely recommend it.

The place was really clean, nicely decorated, and very comfortable. There's a lot of space both inside and out. It's conveniently located to Baker City, close but out in the National forest. It is also close to Philips lake. Also, the owners were super nice.On the down side, there must be a firing range close by. We heard gunshots all day, every day. Also, the well water contains mineral, which is safe to drink but not palatable. Last but not least, the most comfortable outside space is the carport. However, the owner has a security camera focused on it and the camera is monitored. We didn't appreciate the lack of privacy.

What a beautiful place
I booked this house for a long weekend for myself and 2 of my adult children; one of them had a birthday on Friday. We arrived early enough on Thursday and the ever-changing weather cooperated; we got to observe the lunar eclipse. We were Very impressed with the location, the privacy, the Quiet and the amenities. We each had our own space to rest, nap, and read. We loved playing games and cards in the living room, and watching the snow fall, the birds play and trying to count all the gnomes.I love to cook, even on vacation, and I was very impressed with the kitchen setup; the utensils, pots and pans, spices and the variety of kitchen tools. Close to Baker City for shopping and admiring the main street attractions. We also did some exploratory driving to Sumpter, up towards Granite, the animal viewpoint and up 245 a bit for an amazing view. The house was very clean, the beds were comfortable and we all left feeling very rested. We all highly recommend this place.

Peace and relaxing
The house is super comfortable and cute. It feels like home away from home. I would definitely stay there again.
Before walking into the home, I was told that it had just been cleaned. Sadly, the floors, closets, and some cabinets were ripe with fresh mouse droppings. I immediately swept and vacuumed the floors, disinfected the counters and tables, and washed everything that I knew I would use. For example, the skillet under the stove have over 12 mouse droppings in it. The next morning, many of the droppings were back, and a mouse ran from the bathroom to the stove then disappeared under the stove. The property manager eventually showed up with some glue traps. Overall, I do not recommend staying at this VRBO.

Nice House for Family Gathering
We had a nice family gathering at Lone Wolf Lodge. The house lends itself to a family group with its open floor plan and loft areas. The manager was very responsive and cooperative in making our stay a good one. There are a lot of golden mantle chipmunks in the areas so it is best heed the owner’s warning (which was greatly appreciated) and leave your car hoods open while parked to prevent issues. Other than that it was a wonderful stay!!

We were there for a four-day weekend and used this as base camp to explore the area. We enjoyed returning to this quiet forested refuge each afternoon and enjoyed sitting outside until dark. The home is exceptionally well furnished and equipped.

Beautiful House and Property
The house was very clean, spacious, comfortable beds and stocked with everything you need. The property is beautiful and a very relaxing. I would highly suggest bringing your own water for drinking. Brita pitchers were supplied due to the minerals in the water, but two of us still got really upset stomaches. Overall, we loved this place and had a great stay!

Cozy retreat in the woods
The home is spacious, cozy, and comfortable. The kitchen is well stocked with everything we needed and more. The furniture was very comfortable and the TV worked great. It was nice the owner warned us about the iron in the water and provided Brita filters on the faucet and containers for the fridge. The place was just perfect for our stay.

Came over for the Sumpter Flea Market and our family opted for a house rather than a motel in the area. So glad we did.
