Holidays To Assisi
The birthplace of the legendary man who could talk to animals (and no, we don't mean Dr. Dolittle), Assisi is a pilgrimage site for St. Francis fans the world over.
The city’s architecture, history and religious significance really set it apart, making it a great escape for culture buffs too. Assisi holidays are quite the immersion into the old world, so bring along your medieval phrasebook and get ready to experience Italy at its finest.
Things to Do in Assisi
Whatever else you do on your holiday to Assisi, you have to visit the Basilica of St. Francis. Originally built in 1228 (and restored in 1997 after an earthquake), the basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the mother church of the Franciscan Friars. The basilica houses the remains of saints in its crypt, including those of St. Francis himself. Once you've paid your respects, walk the crooked streets to discover historic plazas like Piazza del Comune, home of the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo and its famous clock tower. Then work those legs with a hike up to Rocca Maggiore, an ancient medieval fort, for impressive views of the town and valley.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
Looking to decorate your shelves back home? Stock up on St. Francis statues in the gift shop behind the basilica. Medieval weapons like swords and battle axes are popular in Assisi, but you may have a hard time getting them through customs on your way out of Italy! Get your fill of fine Italian wines, chocolates and cheeses instead make sure your Assisi holiday packages include stops at Piazza Matteotti, so you can roll yourself home, no problemo.
You'll be hungry after shopping, but don’t worry an Assisi holiday has plenty to offer in the food department. Most hotels have an in-house restaurant where Italian specialties, including handmade pasta, are served up fresh for the guests. Or book one of Wotif’s Assisi car hire deals and take a trip just outside of town to sample Assisi Rosso, the full-bodied red wine for which this mountainous region is famous. Grab a slice of pizza, but beware—side effects include the need for a quick nap.
After dinner, wander the streets of Assisi and check out the cosy little wine bars. The town is short on discos and clubs, but there are tons of nice little pubs and cafes when you can settle in with the brew of your choice. Assisi hotels also sometimes have bars on site, so you can get to know your fellow travellers and then see where the night takes you.
