Aitutaki was discovered by William Bligh in 1739, who introduced the island to papaya. Its clear turquoise waters have inspired many artists and writers, including Steve Davey, who reminisced about Aitutaki in his book, "Unforgettable Places to See Before You Die". The island’s major attractions include its beautiful lagoon and divine beaches. The warm waters are shallow enough for safe swimming, surrounded by tropical fish, and the overhanging palm trees provide plenty of shade from the sun.
