The ponds are fed by snowmelt from nearby Mount Fuji and are considered to be one of Japan's most picturesque natural landscapes. The ponds are named after the eight-headed dragon of Japanese mythology, and each pond has its own unique characteristics and colour. Visitors can see the crystal-clear water, which is famous for its purity and clarity, and even drink it directly from the ponds. In addition to the ponds, Oshino Hakkai is also home to a traditional village with thatched-roof houses, where visitors can experience the daily life and culture of rural Japan. The town is known for its well-preserved Edo-period architecture, which has earned it the nickname "Little Edo". Koedo Kawagoe is home to a number of historical landmarks, such as the Kawagoe Castle, which was built in the 16th century, and the Kitain Temple, which features a collection of over 500 wooden statues of Buddha.
