What you can expect

Nagano Prefecture unfolds like a quiet storybook of mountains, temples, and old-world towns, where nature and tradition feel tightly woven together. One of its most iconic sights is Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, tucked deep in a forested valley. Here, wild Japanese macaques descend from the surrounding hills to soak in natural hot springs, especially in winter when snow blankets the trees and steam curls into the cold air. Watching the monkeys bathe, groom one another, or nap at the water’s edge feels intimate and strangely peaceful, a rare glimpse into wildlife living comfortably alongside humans.

The city of Nagano itself carries a calm, grounded atmosphere shaped by its alpine setting and spiritual heritage. At its heart stands Zenko-ji Temple, one of Japan’s most important and beloved Buddhist temples. Founded in the 7th century, Zenko-ji is known for housing a sacred statue believed to be the first Buddhist image brought to Japan. The temple complex is expansive yet welcoming, with a broad approach lined by shops and incense smoke drifting through the air. Inside, visitors can experience the pitch-dark “Okaidan Meguri,” symbolically seeking enlightenment by touch rather than sight.

A short journey away lies Obuse, a small town with a refined, artistic charm. Famous for its chestnuts and its connection to ukiyo-e master Hokusai, Obuse feels intimate and thoughtfully preserved. Traditional buildings, museums, and quiet streets encourage slow exploration, while seasonal sweets and local sake add warmth and flavour to the visit.

Nearby, Shibu Onsen offers a step back in time. This historic hot spring town is a narrow lane of ryokan, wooden facades, and softly glowing lanterns. Guests wander the streets in yukata, visiting the nine public baths, each said to bring a different blessing. In the evening, the sound of geta on stone and the scent of mineral water create an atmosphere that is nostalgic, soothing, and deeply Japanese.

Together, these places form a journey defined by stillness, tradition, and a gentle connection between people, history, and the natural world.
