What you can expect
Discover the charm of Sighișoara, one of Europe’s most beautiful and well-preserved medieval cities. Explore its cobblestone streets, colourful houses, and defensive towers, and soak up an atmosphere that seems to have remained in the Middle Ages.
Begin your tour at the Sighișoara Citadel, the heart of the city and one of the few medieval fortresses still inhabited in Europe. Walk through its narrow streets, small squares, and pastel-colored historical buildings, especially in the evening when it is much quieter.
Next, visit the Clock Tower, the symbol of the city, built in the 14th century. Climb to the top for one of the most beautiful panoramas of the fortress and the new town. Then, head to the Covered Staircase, a wooden corridor built in 1642 to protect students during the winter. Climb its 176 steps to reach the area of the church and the school on the hill.
Continue to the Hill Church, one of the most valuable Gothic churches in Transylvania, with medieval frescoes, an old crypt, and a superb view of the city. Next to it is the old Saxon cemetery, very picturesque.
Visit the Vlad Dracul House, where it is said that Vlad the Impaler was born in 1431, the historical figure who inspired the legend of Dracula. Today, it houses a restaurant on the ground floor and a small thematic museum on the ground floor.
Finally, see the Guild Towers, each defended by a craft guild: Blacksmiths' Tower, Cobblers' Tower, Butchers' Tower, and Tailors' Tower.
Next, visit Viscri, one of the most famous Saxon villages in Transylvania and probably the best-preserved traditional village in Romania. It has become internationally famous due to its authentic architecture, slow pace of life, and the involvement in preservation of personalities such as Charles III.
Explore the village, which has remained almost unchanged for hundreds of years, with its long, pastel-colored houses, large wooden gates, traditional households with inner courtyards, and wide unpaved streets (intentionally kept that way).
In the centre of the village, visit the Fortified Church of Viscri, originally built in the 13th century. It is special because it started as a Romanesque church, was later fortified against Ottoman invasions, and includes defensive towers and thick walls. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with other Transylvanian Saxon villages. From above, the panorama of the village and the hills is spectacular.
Learn about the connection with King Charles, who (when he was Prince of Wales) bought and restored a traditional house in Viscri through The Prince's Foundation. He promoted the area intensively, famously saying that Transylvania is “the last authentic medieval landscape in Europe”. The house can be visited and operates as a traditional guesthouse/museum.
Experience the village as an example of slow tourism, with locals producing jams, cheeses, and wool socks, many houses restored traditionally.
