What you can expect

Head away from the bustle of the city to visit the biggest orangutan rehabilitation centre in Sarawak, and learn about the lives of these remarkable creatures. Rescued from captivity and trained to survive in the surrounding forest, these animals can teach you the enduring power of nature.

After the half-hour ride from your Kuching hotel, a 20-minute walk takes you past a unique collection of rainforest plants in the ethno-botanical gardens. You get a look at the spectacular native forest land, and you can spot a few orangutans at home in the wild, so be sure to keep your camera ready.

Established in 1975 as a sanctuary for injured and orphaned orangutans, the Rehabilitation Centre is the best place in Sarawak to find the semi-wild apes. Get an up close look at the facility, the rehabilitated animals roaming freely in the rainforest, and learn more about its efforts to help the local orangutans before you return to your hotel.
