Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress

Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress located near the Dambulla town in the Central province of the island. It is also known as Sinha-giri or Lion Rock, a name reached due to the shape of the rock that looks like a lion lying down. Entrance to the rock fortress is through the lion’s paws and when climbed up the stairs, it takes you up to an ancient wonderland. According to histories, the fortress was built during 5th century and has been recognised as one of the listed heritage sites of UNESCO. The frescos painted by the king, mirror wall, gardens on top of the rock, the pool in the garden complex are picturesque.
