Join Richard and Gillian, chefs who run their own restaurant, for a private 3-hour cooking demonstration and a meal with wine in their lovely home. Food is at the centre of this family and home, with large indoor and outdoor dining tables, a kitchen, and braai. Like most South Africans, cooking on the braai is the couple's favourite meal and social activity. Braai is cooking on a fire/barbequing which is very popular and a significant part of the culture in South Africa. Gillian and Richard have a fantastic outdoor braai where they often host. Richard and Gillian have a pet dog.

  • This experience is more of an interactive cooking demonstration rather than a hands-on class but feel free to let your hosts know if you prefer more of a hands-on experience.

Activity itinerary

Join your warm and friendly hosts Richard and Gillian in their kitchen for a fun, interactive South African cooking experience and meal! During your cooking demonstration that lasts about 1.5 hours, you will learn how they make 2-3 authentic South African dishes. You may learn to braai (barbecue) rump steak or stuff and braise chicken in a fresh tomato sauce and whip up a traditional malva pudding for dessert. Richard and Gillian are chefs and restaurant owners who believe in using high quality ingredients. Richard is a winemaker very knowledgeable about local wines. Food is at the centre of their home, with large indoor and outdoor dining tables, a kitchen, and braai. Like most South Africans, cooking on the braai is the couple's favourite meal and social activity. Learn about the different foods traditional to South Africa’s diverse culture (Cape Malay, Afrikaans, English, and African). Your South African meal includes dishes from a variety of these culinary traditions, including foods such as bredie (stew), curry and braai roasts. Richard and Gillian would love to know your preference before they set the menu and would be happy to teach you dishes you are keen on learning.
