Description

Venture to the top of Mount Wellington for dramatic views of the Derwent River as it winds from the verdant Central Highlands through the city of Hobart on its way to the sparkling Tasman Sea. Afterward, head over to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) for fascinating insights into Australian culture.

Meet your guide at your hotel and travel out of the bustling city into the lush surrounding countryside. As you leave the coast, your comfortable tour vehicle climbs through tree-covered hills, passing iconic sites like the Anglesea Barracks, Australia's oldest military facility. When you reach the top of what is known locally as “The Mountain,” check out the aptly named Organ Pipes rock formation and listen to your guide share anecdotes of people scaling these nearly cylindrical structures. Before heading back down, take in expansive views of Hobart and the meandering and massive Derwent River as it cuts through Tasmania.

Your next stop is at the Cascades Female Factory, a former prison, and then it's off to MONA. Set on a picturesque riverbank, this eclectic museum boasts one-of-a-kind exhibits in an ever-changing space. The works on display test the boundaries of art, and they are sure to intrigue and fuel discussion. Thanks to a handheld multimedia guide you can learn the stories behind the sculptures, paintings, and installations. The museum also features a winery and brewery, ensuring that your thirst can be quenched as needed. After exploring Australia's largest private art collection, hop on the ferry for a scenic ride back to Hobart.

I had a wonderful surprise. It was very cloudy at Hobart but a nice sunshine a the top of mt Wellington rewarded the group. As to MONA’s it was completely satisfactory and the ferry transfers were excellent

Mount Wellington! Fabulous! MONA - awful, claustrophobic, felt demonic! What a waste of time and money, didn’t bother to take the ferry home, got the first taxi out!
