What you can expect

  • Discover the heart of Maya culture through a genuine homestay on the shores of Lake Atitlán.
At Mayan Home Stay, we believe that travel is about more than visiting beautiful places — it is about connecting with people, sharing experiences, and learning from the communities that make each destination unique.

Our homestay programme was created to give something back to the local communities around Lake Atitlán while offering travellers a meaningful opportunity to experience everyday life with a Maya family. By staying in a local home, you will gain a personal insight into the traditions, customs, and daily rhythms of Guatemalan life.

Welcome into a Maya Family Home
You will stay with a local Kaqchikel Maya family in the peaceful village of San Jorge La Laguna, just outside the centre of Panajachel. This is an opportunity to step away from the usual tourist experience and discover a more authentic side of Guatemala, surrounded by the warmth and hospitality of the local community.

Your host family's mother will prepare your meals, and you will have the opportunity to share a traditional dinner and breakfast with the family, both included in the price. These shared moments offer a wonderful chance to connect, exchange stories, and learn about local food and family traditions.

Although some villagers may be shy at first, you will often discover warm, welcoming people who are happy to share their way of life with respectful guests. Whether you are sharing a meal, learning about daily routines, or simply spending time with your host family, these small moments can become the most memorable part of your journey.

This experience is not about luxury or polished tourist attractions. It is about discovering Guatemala through the people who call it home, gaining a deeper appreciation of Maya culture, and supporting the local community through responsible tourism.

Travel with Respect and an Open Heart
As guests in someone's home and community, we encourage all visitors to approach this experience with curiosity, humility, and respect.

Respect local customs and traditions. Every family and community has its own way of life, and an open mind will help you appreciate the experience.
Ask before taking photographs. Always seek permission before photographing people in the village or your host family.
Embrace simple living. The accommodation may be basic, but this is part of experiencing everyday life in the community.
Be open to connecting. A shared meal, a smile, or a simple conversation can create meaningful memories across cultures.
Stay a Night. Share a Story. Discover a Culture.
You can choose to stay for one night or several nights with a Kaqchikel Maya family in San Jorge La Laguna. However long you stay, we hope you leave with more than photographs — we hope you take home new friendships, a deeper understanding of Maya culture, and a genuine connection to the community around Lake Atitlán.
