Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial

  • 45m
Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial is a World War II American military war grave cemetery, lying between the villages of Coton and Madingley, 7 km north-west of Cambridge, England. The cemetery, dedicated in 1956, contains 3,811 American war dead and covers 30.5 acres. It is one of 26 overseas military cemeteries administered by the American Battle Monuments Commission.

Thorpe Abbotts

  • 2h
Travel to Thorpe Abbots, the home of the ‘Bloody Hundredth’, a crucial stop on your journey. This Bomb Group earned a reputation for high casualty rates as they flew missions, adding depth to your narrative. The 100th was among an armada of American bomber and fighter groups to arrive in England to bolster the flagging formations of the Eighth Air Force. Eighth Air Force Bomber Command became the Eighth Air Force in February 1944 and oversaw the bombardment of strategic targets throughout Europe until 1945. However, the 100th was not statistically noteworthy. They won numerous awards, but other groups won more. They didn’t fly the most missions, drop the most bombs, or even suffer the most casualties. But where did their legend come from?

Parham Airfield Museum

  • 2h
At Parham, continue to unravel the tales of the 390th Bombardment Group, a key element of your journey. Their heroic efforts, from attacking industrial targets to supporting ground forces, enrich your understanding of the wartime experience. The Museum is a tribute to the endeavours of the 390th Bomb Group who flew B-17s from Parham Airfield during World War II. It also plays tribute to other 8th US Army Air Force and allied airmen operating throughout East Anglia during the Second World War, and also the men of the British Resistance Organisation. The Museum's continued existance relies on donations and volunteer supoort to help with roster duties and maintenance necessary to ensure the continued preservation of the building and its contents
