Monument Valley
  • 2h
Monument Valley is a region of the Colorado Plateau characterised by a cluster of vast sandstone buttes, the largest reaching 1,000 ft above the valley floor. It is located on the Arizona–Utah state line, near the Four Corners area. Monument Valley has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. Director John Ford used the location for a number of his best-known films and thus, in the words of critic Keith Phipps, "its five square miles [13 square kilometres] have defined what decades of moviegoers think of when they imagine the American West."
Day 3: Arches National Park - Salt Lake City - Great Salt Lake
  • 4 stops
  • Meals: breakfast
  • Accommodation: SpringHill Suites by Marriott Salt Lake City Airport; Comfort Inn Layton; or similar
Arches National Park
  • 2h
Arches National Park lies north of Moab in the state of Utah. Bordered by the Colorado River in the southeast, it’s known as the site of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, such as the massive, red-hued Delicate Arch in the east. A long, thin Landscape Arch stands in Devils Garden to the north. Other geological formations include Balanced Rock, towering over the desert landscape in the middle of the park.
Utah State Capitol
  • 1h
The Utah State Capitol is the house of government for the US state of Utah. The building houses the chambers and offices of the Utah State Legislature, the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, the State Auditor and their staffs. The capital is the main building of the Utah State Capitol Complex, which is located on Capitol Hill, overlooking city centre Salt Lake City. The Neoclassical revival, Corinthian style building was designed by architect Richard K.A. Kletting and built between 1912 and 1916. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Temple Square
  • 1h
Temple Square is a 10-acre (4.0 ha) complex, owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), in the centre of Salt Lake City. Contained within Temple Square are the Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake Tabernacle, Salt Lake Assembly Hall, the Seagull Monument, and two visitors' centers. The square was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964, recognizing the Mormon achievement in the settlement of Utah.
Great Salt Lake
  • 30m
Great Salt Lake, lake in northern Utah, US, the largest inland body of salt water in the Western Hemisphere and one of the most saline inland bodies of water in the world. The lake is fed by the Bear, Weber, and Jordan rivers and has no outlet. The lake has fluctuated greatly in size, depending on the rates of evaporation and the flow of the rivers that feed it. Like the Dead Sea, the Great Salt Lake exists within an arid environment and has chemical characteristics like that of the oceans. However, it has a much greater salinity than the oceans, since natural evaporation exceeds the supply of water from the rivers feeding the lake.
Day 4: Yellowstone National Park
  • 4 stops
  • Meals: breakfast
  • Accommodation: Yellowstone Country Inn; Dude & Roundup; Travellers Lodge; or similar
Grand Prismatic Spring
  • 1h
The Grand Prismatic Spring, approximately 370 feet (110 m) in diameter and160 feet (50 m) deep, discharges an estimated 560 US gallons (2,100 L) of 160 °F (70 °C) water per minute. It is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world. The vivid colours in the spring are the result of microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The mats produce colours ranging from green to red; the amount of colour in the microbial mats depends on the ratio of chlorophyll to carotenoids and on the temperature gradient in the runoff. In the summer, the mats tend to be orange and red, whereas in the winter the mats are usually dark green. The centre of the pool is sterile due to extreme heat.
Old Faithful
  • 1h 30m
Old Faithful is a cone geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone National Park. It is one of the park's best-known natural features and is famous for its predictability. It generally erupts every 91 minutes.
Fountain Paint Pot
  • 1h
The Fountain Paint Pot is named for the reds, yellows and browns of the mud in this area. The differing colours are derived from oxidation states of the iron in the mud. As with all hot springs, the heat in the caldera forces pressurized water up through the ground, which is expelled here. Also, rising gases cause the bubbling action. The bubble action in the mud varies with the seasons.
Biscuit Basin
  • 1h
Biscuit-like sinter deposits once lined the edge of Sapphire's crater, and in the 1880s it received its name for the knobby formations. The 1959 earthquake caused Sapphire to erupt, breaking and dislodging the formations. Biscuit Basin is an isolated thermal group and is actually a part of the Upper Geyser Basin. Sapphire Pool dominates the main group west of the river. The water of this pool, or spring, is crystal clear with a Oriental blue sapphire tint. Other important features include Shell Geyser, which has a golden-lined crater, and Jewel Geyser, known for the shiny, beaded sinter around its vent.
Day 5: Yellowstone National Park - Grand Teton National Park
  • 8 stops
  • Meals: Not included
  • Accommodation: Baymont by Wyndham Provo River; or similar

  • 30m
Located a quarter mile upstream of the larger Lower Falls, the Upper Yellowstone River Falls plunge 109 feet down an eroded lava cliff into the basin below. The area below the falls has been subject to heavier erosion than above.
West Thumb Geyser Basin
  • 1h
The West Thumb Geyser Basin is situated at the western edge of a large bay along the shores of Yellowstone Lake. This area is known as the West Thumb caldera which was formed by a volcanic eruption that took place 174,000 years ago. This bay is actually a smaller caldera within the larger Yellowstone caldera. The resulting caldera filled with water, creating the bay.
Artist Point
  • 30m
Artist Point is one of the most spectacular scenic areas in the Canyon Area of the Park. The sheer walls drop 700 feet to the bottom of the canyon. Upriver the powerful Lower Falls are still in view. Downriver the canyon widens and deepens to a maximum of 1,540 feet. The canyon walls are predominantly yellow but colours of blue, red, orange and brown are also present. The colours are ever changing and especially intensified after a rain with bright sunshine.
Norris Geyser Basin
  • 30m
Norris Geyser Basin, named after an early Yellowstone Superintendent, may be the hottest geyser basin in Yellowstone. The stark, barren landscape of Porcelain Basin is the result of the acidic environment. Due to the hostile condition plants, algae and bacteria have difficulty in establishing themselves. Instead, the basin derives its colours from mineral oxides, in spectrums of pink, red, orange (iron oxides) and yellow (sulphur and iron sulphates). The largest geyser in the world is located here. Steamboat Geyser has long periods of dormancy, but when it does erupt it sends jets of water nearly 380 feet high in a spectacular display.
Hayden Valley
  • 30m
This valley, centrally located in Yellowstone National Park, is the first place to go to see wildlife in Yellowstone. Mediating between geological formations and abstract compositions, Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains consists of locally sourced limestone boulders stacked vertically in groups ranging between three and six. Each stone boasts a different fluorescent colour, and each individual totem stands between thirty and thirty-five feet high. The artwork extends Rondinone’s long-running interest in natural phenomena and their reformulation in art.
