Activity itinerary

Stadttheater Klagenfurt

  • 15m
Begin your walking tour outside the Stadttheater Klagenfurt, an elegant theatre designed by the renowned Viennese architectural firm Fellner & Helmer. From here, enter the historic heart of Klagenfurt and stroll through the surrounding streets towards the Old Town. The route quickly reveals the city's distinctive character, where Renaissance urban planning, historic town houses and later Baroque architecture come together.

Ursulinengasse

  • 10m
Continue along Ursulinengasse towards the Stadtpfarrkirche St. Egid, one of the most prominent churches in Klagenfurt's historic centre. The church's present Baroque appearance dates largely from the late 17th century, while its impressive Stadtpfarrturm was completed in 1709. Rising approximately 90 metres above the Old Town, the tower is one of Klagenfurt's most recognisable landmarks.

Altes Rathaus, Alter Platz

  • 10m
Continue into Alter Platz, one of the most atmospheric squares in central Klagenfurt. Surrounded by historic façades, cafés and shops, the square illustrates the Renaissance character that continues to define the city centre. Klagenfurt is particularly notable for its extensive pedestrianised Old Town, which allows you to explore its historic streets at a relaxed pace. Look out for the Dreifaltigkeitssäule and the historic buildings surrounding the square before continuing through the adjoining lanes. This is also an opportunity to appreciate Klagenfurt's distinctive Renaissance courtyards and elegant town houses.

Haus zur goldenen Gans

  • 10m
Pause outside the Haus zur Goldenen Gans, one of the oldest surviving buildings in Klagenfurt. Documented as early as 1489, the building is particularly recognisable by the gilded goose emblem above its entrance. Its historic fabric and Renaissance architectural elements provide an excellent glimpse into the character of Klagenfurt before continuing towards the city's principal square.

Neuer Platz

  • 10m
Walk towards Neuer Platz, the central square and one of the most important landmarks of Klagenfurt. At its centre stands the magnificent Lindwurmbrunnen, depicting the legendary dragon-like creature that has become the city's symbol and heraldic animal. The Renaissance monument was created between 1583 and 1593 from a single block of local chlorite schist. The figure of Hercules, representing the legendary slayer of the Lindwurm, was added in 1636 together with the fountain basin and decorative wrought-iron grille. Take time here to hear the fascinating legend behind the creature and admire one of the city's most photographed monuments.

Worthersee Mandl

  • 10m
Continue through the pedestrianised streets towards the Wörtherseemandl, a charming fountain depicting a legendary figure associated with the creation of Lake Wörthersee. According to local legend, the figure opened a barrel and released a great flood that transformed the surrounding landscape into the lake. The fountain adds a distinctly local element to the tour and introduces you to the legends and folklore that form an important part of Klagenfurt's identity.

Landhaus

  • 15m
Continue to the Landhaus, one of the most significant Renaissance buildings in Klagenfurt. Dating from the late 16th century, the building forms an important part of the city's historic centre and is particularly notable for its two distinctive towers and elegant inner courtyard.

Klagenfurt Cathedral

  • 15m
Conclude your exploration of the Old Town at Klagenfurt Cathedral, located on Domplatz. The imposing Baroque church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and provides a fitting finale to the tour, combining Klagenfurt's religious heritage with the architectural richness of its historic centre. Take a moment to appreciate the cathedral's façade and interior details before concluding the walking tour in the heart of the Old Town.
