What you can expect

Begin your adventure in Killaloe, crossing the historic bridge over the Shannon into Ballina, Co Tipperary. Cycle along brand-new paths, taking in scenic river views as you make your way to Birdhill.

Stop in Birdhill, known for its parklands and public artworks. Enjoy a coffee or lunch at The Old Barracks or Matt the Threshers, or save your appetite for O'Brien's Bridge.

Continue along the old Limerick road to a quiet back road, crossing the railway line and heading down to the river at Montpelier. Cross the river at O'Brien's Bridge and head off-road to the Parteen Weir. Choose between an access road or a footpath along the river to reach this engineering marvel.

Marvel at the Parteen Weir, a testament to early 20th-century engineering. In the 1920s, a massive project split the Shannon in two, feeding a hydroelectric power station at Ardnacrusha. Enjoy great views up and downstream and appreciate the ambition of the times.

Return through O'Brien's Bridge, with another opportunity for a coffee break at Nellie's, offering good coffee and tasty treats.

Continue through County Clare to Bridgetown. Enjoy the quiet roads and beautiful views of the County Clare countryside as you head back to the starting point in historical Killaloe.
