What you can expect
Explore the Medieval Mile Museum with a tour guide inside the former St Mary’s Church, one of Kilkenny’s most evocative medieval sites. Built on a 13th-century church and graveyard location, the museum brings together civic treasures, stone carvings, and archaeological discoveries that trace the work, beliefs, and daily routines of Kilkenny over more than 800 years.
Start in the St Mary’s room, where your guide introduces the building’s long history and the discoveries made during restoration. Follow the storey through an animated timeline and look down through glass floors to see the foundations of a huge tower that once dominated the skyline. Along the way, learn about artefacts and human remains uncovered on site, and how they connect to the people who lived, worked, and were buried here.
Continue to the High Cross exhibition to explore the world of the High Kings of Ossory, the foundation of the monastery of Kilkenny by St Canice, and the city’s stone-sculpting tradition, reaching back thousands of years. Then head into the Kilkenny Room, where a dramatic glass window overlooks the city and a rare collection of civic documents opens a window onto a merchant-led medieval town. Your guide will help you spot stand-out items, including the Liber Primus, Kilkenny’s medieval town book.
Finish in the Rothe Chapel, a private chantry chapel built around 1560 by the Rothes, wealthy Kilkenny merchants. See unusually well-preserved carvings on the tombs that hint at family status, belief, and memory-making. If time allows, end with a quiet walk through the medieval graveyard, now a small wildlife haven in the city centre. The tour concludes back inside the museum, with the Medieval Mile trail just outside for anyone who wants to keep exploring.
