What you can expect
Begin with a visit to Lonan Old Church, dedicated to St. Adamnan, the Abbot of Iona, dating back to the 12th century. This secluded ancient site holds religious significance, showcasing a collection of carved stone crosses from the 7th century, including an impressive 10th-century wheel head cross situated in its original position.
On to King Orry's Grave we explore this ancient site steeped in mystery where tradition has it as the resting place of the famous Viking Godred Crovan - King Orry. But we will discover that it is a Neolithic place of burial known as a chambered long cairn. Stepping back in time here is truly wonderful experience.
From Laxey, venture onto Maughold, situated in a stunning area of natural beauty. Explore a unique blend of Celtic and Viking heritage as you view some remarkable examples of carved stone crosses and explore the remnants of the first monastery on the island dating back to the 6th century.
As we leave Maughold, on our way west, we will pass through Ramsey with its bustling harbour and Victorian swing bridge; we’ll also encounter miles of sandy beaches and bays now a protected marine nature reserve. Time for refreshments if needed.
Head westward to Peel, with its adjacent St. Patrick’s Isle said to be one of the most important historic and religious sites in the British Isles. Dominated by the sprawling ruins of Peel Castle, it is a place steeped in legend and myth. The site, first used more than 7,000 years ago, has served as a settlement, a Celtic Monastery, a religious centre, and a Viking stronghold and fortress throughout its history. We can enjoy the sea air as we walk around the Castle while looking out for our resident Bottlenose Dolphins.
Next, visit Tynwald Hill. Tynwald is believed to have been established by Norse Viking settlers over a thousand years ago, making it the oldest continuous parliament in the world. The hill symbolises the Isle of Man’s independence as a self-governing crown dependency. There's a wealth of history to explore in this area, including the Royal Chapel, likely built on the site of an ancient Keeill.
Arriving next at Balladoole Heritage Site with time to explore the wonderful layers of rich history at this special place, including a Viking Ship Burial, Bronze age burial and a Christian Keeill - an ancient type of chapel. Set in the backdrop of beautiful Scenery and stunning views.
Finishing the tour, we’ll explore the ancient capital of Castletown built around the impressive Castle Rushen, built by a Viking King and where the last Viking King on the Isle of Man died. We can take a stroll around the attractive harbour and picturesque lanes with their seaside cottages and venture inside the Castle.
