What you can expect
Welcome to the Hundertwasser Art Centre
Visitors begin their journey the moment they enter the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery, stepping into a world where vibrant colour, curved lines and natural materials create an uplifting, immersive atmosphere. From the first glimpse of the irregular tiled floors, handcrafted mosaics and living walls, guests are introduced to Hundertwasser’s belief that nature, creativity and architecture should exist in harmony.
Hundertwasser in New Zealand 1973–2000 Exhibition
Visitors then move into the main exhibition, exploring original paintings, tapestries, architectural models and ecological projects that reveal Hundertwasser’s philosophy of living in tune with the environment. This space offers the largest collection of his work outside Vienna.
Wairau Māori Art Gallery
Next, guests enter the Wairau Māori Art Gallery, the first public gallery dedicated to contemporary Māori art. Its rotating exhibitions showcase powerful, thought-provoking works by leading Māori artists, offering a cultural dialogue alongside Hundertwasser’s legacy.
Afforested Roof & Golden Cupola
The visit continues onto the afforested roof, a living artwork planted with native species. Guests can wander the rooftop before climbing to the Golden cupola for breathtaking panoramic views of Whangārei’s Town Basin and beyond.
Guided Tours & Experiences
From Thursday to Sunday, an 11am guided tour deepens the experience with stories about Hundertwasser’s life, ideas and architectural vision. Visitors can also enhance their visit with an audio guide available daily.

The journey concludes in the MuseumShop, where guests can browse unique gifts, art prints, books, design pieces and handcrafted items inspired by Hundertwasser’s world.
